Working Conditions
The employee in this position is required to live on station and to work on an on-call basis as assigned. When performing on-call duty, the employee must remain on hatchery grounds and within hearing and proper response distance to hatchery alarms to minimize risk to hatchery resources; however, the employee is not confined to specific hatchery facilities, and may use on-call duty time effectively for personal purposes provided the employee remains unimpaired to effectively respond to alarm notifications. Although there is no “fixed” time for response, response time should be 15 to 30 minutes or less, dependent on hatchery conditions. The employee’s presence on hatchery grounds is also necessary as a means of enhancing security for the hatchery facility as a whole. When conditions allow (during periods of non-critical conditions) on call employees may leave hatchery grounds for the purpose of making any reasonable trip within the 15 to 30 minutes response window. Employees should be allowed sufficient flexibility while on call and in conjunction with the hatchery manager may discuss timeframes allowed. It is recognized each situation is unique and can be handled on a case by case basis.

Handle chemicals used in treatment of fish or disinfection of fish handling equipment to prevent or control fish diseases. Work with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants, and other solvents during routine maintenance activities. Work long hours during the spawning season and egg incubation process. Must display a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public. Occasionally, work alone on weekends and may have to respond to emergencies while working alone and while on standby. Must be able to perform repetitive motions while raking debris from water intakes, cleaning ponds, feeding fish, and during spawning.
