Pay Range
$123,960 - $159,168 Annually for the SES.2 level
$148,650 - $190,932 Annually for the SES.3 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
NOTE: This is a flexible term position dependent on project funding. Current funding is expected for at least 3 years.
The Bioscience and Biotechnology division within Physical and Life Sciences at LLNL seeking to fill a position for a dedicated and hardworking Biologist with skills as a Lab Automation Technician. We are seeking a life science staff member to develop a pipeline using automation for high throughput production and characterization of proteins in support of infectious disease research and countermeasure development for future pandemic preparedness. You will actively participate in process development to create a pipeline for producing and testing biologic countermeasures, principally therapeutic antibodies. Positions are in the Microbiology/Immunology or Bionanomaterials group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.
This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level, depending on your qualifications. Additional job duties will be assigned at the higher level.
You will:
Scale throughput of established lab protocols by incorporating commercially available lab automation instrumentation
Conduct pipeline development with lab automation, including information management, for high throughput protein production and characterization
Collaborate on process development plans and contributing to progress reports
Work with other scientists to expand programs for national preparedness against pandemic and other infectious disease threats
Interact with a large interdisciplinary team of scientists, project and program leaders, and commercial partners
Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meeting.
Other duties as assigned.
Additional duties at the SES.3 level:
Maintain familiarity with state-of-the-art developments in the field; evaluate and transfer critical technologies for high throughput antibody function and developability screening
Identify optimal automation solutions for: production of DNA plasmids, recombinant protein expression, protein quality assessment, and biophysical characterization recombinant proteins.
Work with computational biologists and data scientists to develop data standards and establish unsupervised data capture processes as part of the production pipeline; data will inform computational design of biologic countermeasures.
Contribute to funding programs progress reports and participation in multi-institution program meeting and scientific conferences.
Qualifications
MS in Chemical Engineering in a life science or biotechnology setting, or a relevant field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Experience operating and troubleshooting lab automation, particularly for gene synthesis, cloning, recombinant expression, protein purification, or protein characterization
Ability to work with at a high level of independence
Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information
Work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment both independently and as a team with a diverse set of scientists, and other technical and administrative staff
Effective problem-solving skills to implement solutions of limited complexity.
Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level:
PhD in Chemical Engineering in a life science or biotechnology setting, or a relevant field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Significant experience adapting commercially available lab automation solutions to applications not developed by the vendor
Significant experience programming, adapting, and troubleshooting lab automation, particularly for gene synthesis, cloning, recombinant expression, protein purification, and/or protein characterization
Subject matter expert on state-of-the-art automation solutions
Qualifications we desire:
Experience with laboratory information management software
Experience integrating separate automated process steps into a semi- or fully automated process
Python programing
Experience in mammalian tissue culture, transfection, and protein expression
Expertise in molecular biology, immunology, protein biochemistry and/or biophysics

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years. If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).
