Job Introduction

This role provides an 11-month training placement for a Tonmeister sound engineering student with a strong interest in orchestral music, giving the opportunity to work at the highest level in recording and broadcasting programmes and concerts on BBC Radio 3 and other BBC networks. This role is based mainly at City Halls, Glasgow, working with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The trainee may also spend time with other radio broadcast teams working across various genres of output including rock, pop, jazz, folk and world music, either in BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay studios or on outside broadcasts.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide operational assistance to Senior Technical Producer, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as required
  • Assist STP or Radio Audio Supervisors on studio recordings and outside broadcasts of orchestral, chamber and other types of music throughout the 11 month placement
  • Undertake editing and technical checks on pre-recorded programmes, inserts and music items prior to transmission
  • Assist and advise Producers on speech recordings and post-production matters
  • Provide support and training for production staff in the use of audio equipment

Are you the right candidate?
  • Currently undertaking study in a degree course in the fundamentals of sound engineering or a related subject
  • Has a strong interest in orchestral music recording and BBC radio
  • Evidence of drive and enthusiasm for BBC radio music programmes (especially, but not limited to, classical music output) and programme making
  • Experience of team working and the ability to deal tactfully and respectfully with a wide range of people, including artists and senior production staff, sometimes in stressful environments
  • A commitment to respecting equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace as outlined in the BBC Values
  • Self-motivated with a flexible approach to the demands of the organisation and live broadcasting / recording
  • Experience of working under pressure
  • IT literate
  • Excellent aural judgement
