The Well is a Charity in Blind River Ontario, offering a Youth Center, Food Stability for the area, Community Events, and Programming for Children. We also have a Coffee Shop that functions as a fundraiser. We believe in building our community and offering new opportunities to children who have fewer opportunities, including a Summer Day Camp with Snacks, Games, Crafts, and Fun Bible Teaching. Our goal with our workers and volunteers is to create a community around purposeful giving. We have a fun working environment that welcomes our employees and volunteers to challenge themselves and learn new skills!
Position is Funded from the Canada Summer Jobs Grant and will run for the months of July and August. The Pay rate is $15.50 an hour and tips, and is 30 hours a week including weekends. Applicants must be between the ages 15-30 and returning to school in the fall. Deadline to apply is June 8th.
Job Overview
We are looking for a Barista to prepare and serve hot and cold beverages, and food, including various types of coffee and tea, baked goods, and sandwiches. Barista responsibilities include educating customers on our drinks menu, making recommendations based on their preferences, up-selling special items, and taking orders. To be successful in this role, you should have customer service skills and knowledge of how brewing equipment operates. You should also be able to work various shifts. Note: This position also will involve supervising and helping out with the Youth Center. Ultimately, you’ll ensure an excellent drinking experience for our guests.
Responsibilities
- Greet customers as they enter
- Give customers drink menus and answer their questions regarding ingredients
- Take orders while paying attention to details (e.g. preferences of coffee blend, dairy, and sugar ratios)
- Prepare beverages following recipes
- Serve beverages and prepared food, like cookies, pastries, and sandwiches
- Receive and process payments (cash and credit cards)
- Keep the bar area clean consistently
- Maintain stock of clean mugs and plates
- Check if brewing equipment operates properly and report any maintenance needs
- Comply with health and safety regulations
- Communicate customer feedback to managers and recommend new menu items
- Maintain the cleanliness of The Well, including floors, windows, kitchen, bathroom, changing garbages, and the building in general
- Wash and sanitize dishes and equipment as needed and at the end of the day.
- Complete closing cleanup checklist: Sweep, mop, wipe surfaces, sanitize equipment, clean bathrooms, etc.
- Assist with Youth Center as needed
- Oversee hospitality aspects of events: prepare shopping lists, prepare food, set up food, serve food etc.
Applicable experience and skills
- Previous work experience in fast food, or as a Barista or Waiter/Waitress
- Hands-on experience with brewing equipment
- Ability to read and speak English proficiently
- Strong ability to multitask
- Knowledge of sanitation regulations
- Flexibility to work various shifts
- Basic math skills
- Ability to gauge customers’ preferences
- Excellent communication skills
- Relevant training is a plus (food safe handlers course, etc)
- Ability to supervise students during youth center hours
