A Bar Person, who is wanting to progress further in their role, is responsible for serving drinks at our venue. Their duties typically include serving food and beverages, taking orders, keeping the bar area clean and well-stocked. Along with cash handling.

Bar Person Duties and Responsibilities

Bar Person have a wide range of duties from preparing and serving drinks to engaging with customers and providing product recommendations. Some of them might specialise in mixology and creating unique cocktails. General Bar Person duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Preparing and serving high-quality alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Using a till to take orders and process payments
  • Checking customers identification and age verification
  • Engaging with customers and advising them about current promotions
  • Maintaining a clean and organised bar area, including quickly responding to spills and other health and safety hazards
  • Monitoring and replenishing stock levels as needed
  • Serving food and snacks
  • Clearing tables, wiping surfaces and operating the dishwasher to ensure ample glassware is available
  • Must be able to have a good working relationship with our Events and Operations team.
  • Team meetings will also be compulsory attendance

What does a Bar Person do?

Bar Persons are not only the friendly faces greeting your customers from behind the bar, but they’re also responsible for ensuring the bar runs smoothly by keeping the bar area clean and replenishing stock. Taking orders, advising customers about current promotions and mixing drinks are just some of the customer-facing responsibilities for Bar Persons. However, to ensure bar service can operate efficiently, they also monitor stock levels, restocking when needed, promptly react to spills or hazards and reach out to the Bar Manager for support when needed.

Bar Staff skills and qualifications

Successful Bar Staff typically have excellent customer service skills, the ability to multitask and can remain calm when working in a busy environment. Teamwork is vital in Bar Staff roles and being able to communicate effectively with others is key to success. Top Skills for Bar Staff are:

  • Customer service skills, including being knowledgeable about products to assist customers best
  • Enjoy working with others and be able to cooperate as part of a team
  • Active listening skills and a good memory for remembering different orders from different customers
  • Calm demeanour to deal with demanding customers
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to carry out basic order processing and payment tasks on a till or a handheld device
  • The ability to work well in a noisy, high-pressure environment
  • Ability to multitask and remain organised during a busy period

Bar Staff experience requirements

A background in the hospitality industry is beneficial, and previous experience in Bar Staff positions is useful. Experience in retail, food service, customer service or catering is helpful. Some employers can also consider candidates without experience, but with the right attitude and enthusiasm to work in a customer-facing role.
