JOB SUMMARY
To carry out a variety of nutrition related tasks under the supervision and direction of the dietitians
To undertake administrative and clerical duties that assist the dietitian’s clinical work, supporting both the adult and paediatric dietetic teams
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Service Specific
1. To provide assistance to the dietitians in implementing dietetic care plans for in-patients and outpatients
2. To liaise with catering staff with regards to provision of special diets and nutritional supplements, in conjunction with the dietitians
3. To liaise with pharmacy and pharmaceutical companies regarding nutritional feeds and supplements, in conjunction with the dietitians
4. With support from the dietitians, to undertake teaching and education of nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team in nutrition screening and basic nutrition support
5. To update dietetic resources as required by the dietitians
1. Communication
- The post-holder will communicate with patients, carers and health professionals, e.g. Nutrition Nurse, Speech Therapist, Nursing Staff and Doctors on the telephone or in person
- The post-holder will talk to ward staff regarding patient’s nutrition
- The post-holder will talk about healthy eating to the general public
- The post-holder will attend and contribute to staff meetings
- The post-holder will assist with the running of the office as required e.g. filing, photocopying, answering the phone
- The post-holder will photocopy diet sheets and other resources
- The post-holder will record clinical findings in patient’s records
- The post-holder will complete the reporting of patient contacts in line with department guidelines
- The post-holder will organise and prioritise clinical work load
1. Policy and Service Development
- The post holder will assist in the implementation of departmental policies and procedures
- The post holder will ensure all equipment has been regularly maintained
- The post holder will ensure all equipment is used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
- The post holder will ensure any equipment found to be faulty/unsafe should be removed from use and reported to the appropriate authority
- The post holder will assist with the induction of new staff
- The post-holder will assist with student training
- The post-holder will undertake appropriate education and training as identified through the appraisal process to ensure continuing professional development
- The post-holder will find patient’s details on the Electronic Patient Record system
- The post-holder will find patient’s blood results on the computer and document in their records
- The post-holder will gather information relevant to a patients care from the hospital IT systems and electronic observation systems.
