Job summary
We are currently seeking enthusiastic Operation Managers within Division 1 at University Hospitals Birmingham.
Division 1 is a support service with vacancies covering Theatres and Anaesthetics and Critical care workforce.
All posts are full time, permanent, requiring 37.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday, working across Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, and Good Hope Hospital & Solihull Hospital.
We are keen to hear from applicants with operational management experience who are already currently working within the acute setting in the NHS.
These posts offer an excellent opportunity for development, gaining exposure to a wide range of operational initiatives and challenges within the directorate.
This is an exciting opportunity within the Theatre and Anaesthetic directorates, working alongside multidisciplinary teams to deliver high quality, safe, efficient and effective clinical care. The service delivers 70 operating theatres across the Trusts four acute hospitals. Providing support services to multiple specialities including General Surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat, Maxillofacial, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Cardiac and Neurosurgery. We also provide an outreach service which supports activity external to theatres including Interventional Radiology, Cath Lab and Endoscopy.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
- To ensure that the operational performance of their assigned areas is effectively managed to meet agreed Trust and Divisional objectives.
- Work with the Deputy Divisional Director of Operations, Clinical Service Leads, Senior Nurses and General Manager to ensure achievement of access standards for delegated specialties.
- To monitor performance against activity targets and other service objectives. To ensure General Manager Operational Manager Service Manager Admin Manangers secretaries that all national and locally agreed access standards and booking targets are understood and met.
- To ensure complaints and incidents are investigated in line with Trust policies to identify, agree and implement corrective action plans.
- To ensure the Trust's Infection Control policy is fully enforced.
- Co-ordinate assigned audits within the Division.
- Lead on the annual capacity and business planning process within delegated specialties
- To co-ordinate the provision of locum Medical Staff for the Division, monitor EWTD and be the medical staffing lead for the group.
- To ensure the delivery of key performance standards for designated areas within the Division escalating any variances and providing action plans as required.
- To monitor and analyse data as required to ensure that the General Manager has access to timely and accurate information on all relevant key performance indicators with the appropriate formulation of data for reports

- Educated to degree level or equivalent
Experience
Essential
- Post graduate management experience or equivalent knowledge obtained through a combination of continuous professional development & training courses.
- Considerable experience of Knowledge and experience of budgetary management including sound working knowledge of revenue expenditure, budgets, capital including forecasting trends.
- Experience of developing service opportunities, through business planning, monitoring, and leading the implementation of successful change management processes
- Evidence of delivering excellent standards of patient care
- Clear understanding of the NHS agenda
Desirable
- Understanding and experience in managing Referral to treatment (RTT) pathways and the rules that apply to patients waiting times.
- Evidence of success in the management of a multidisciplinary environment
- Evidence of significant achievement and personal contribution to organization success
