Job summary
We present an excellent opportunity to be part of our Radiotherapy Physics service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The successful candidate may be involved with planning and quality assurance across the large range of treatment types delivered, including VMAT and SABR on six Elekta Versas, helical tomotherapy on two Tomotherapy devices and one Radixact unit, and SRS/SABR on our CyberKnife platform, or brachytherapy using the Elekta Flexitron. We will soon install our third wide-bore CT scanner.
Our fifty staff work to assist in the treatment of around 4,500 new patients per year across these platforms in addition to performing R&D activity within the field of Radiotherapy Physics.
Note that this position requires HCPC registration. If the successful candidate does not possess registration they may be appointed to Annex 21 Band 7 or a lower banding in the interim.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
Your day-to-day activities will depend upon your interests and the need of the department, but will include treatment planning, quality assurance and dosimetry activity across multiple treatment platforms. You will act as the duty physicist and participate in the early/late rota to ensure continuity of physics advice and cover across treatment hours.
Research and Development activity is encouraged, and presentation of work at national and international meetings expected.

Qualifications
Essential
- Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in Physics.
- MSc in radiation physics or medical radiation physics
- State registration HCPC as a Clinical Scientist.
Desirable
- Corporate membership of a professional body (eg IPEM)
Experience
Essential
- Significant post graduate experience in the application of Medical Physics.
- Evidence of a record of CPD and appraisal assessments, or equivalent evidence of career progression and continuing learning.
- Experience of research and development activities.
- Experience of project management.
- Highly developed specialist knowledge of Radiotherapy Physics and peripheral knowledge of other areas within Medical Physics.
- Specialist knowledge of a wide range of clinical radiotherapy techniques.
- Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure and staff error, with respect to Radiotherapy Physics. Should have the ability to exercise judgement on complex facts or situations requiring urgent interpretation and analysis, followed by a comparison of the possible options for action.
- Fluency with UHBT IT packages such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. with good keyboard skills.
- Expert understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (eg IRR17, IRMER17, Data Protection Act etc).
- Needs to understand the hazards posed by, and precautions needed with:
Ionising radiation
Electrical hazards
Lasers
Biological Hazards

- Ability to understand and write computer software required for applications to radiotherapy
- Ability to solve scientific and mathematical problems in relation to radiotherapy.
- Specialist skills in radiotherapy physics.

- Manual dexterity in handling delicate electronic instruments.
- Ability to implement new developments and system changes with minimum direct supervision and in appropriate timescale.

- Able to demonstrate a high degree of initiative.
- Able to use VDUs more or less continuously, except when involved in meetings, discussions, QA or troubleshooting on Clinical Equipment.
