Job description

We have an exciting opportunity in Frank Cooksey Rehabilitation ward which is a 15 Specialised Neuro Rehabilitation beds. FCRU is dedicated to providing expert Rehab care to patient suffering from neurological/surgical conditions, commonly catering for patients following:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI)
  • Stroke
  • Neurological conditions i.e Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Chronic sub dural haematoma(CSDH)
  • Metastatic spinal cord compression(MSCC) (Non-complex)
  • Sub arachnoid haemorrhage(SAH)
  • Infections and tumours of the Central Nervous system(CNS)
The regional Neuroscience service at King’s serves a population of 3.8 million and has an international reputation for motor neurone disease, movement and neuromuscular disorder and epilepsy surgery. Providing a wide range of expert clinical services for both regional and local patients, the service is continually expanding and developing, offering new and exciting career options for nursing. This strong clinical speciality, combined with a nursing team committed to high clinical standards and a supportive environment, makes us a compelling career option for ambitious neuroscience nurses.

The unit comprises of:
  • Neurosurgery with integrated telemetry unit
  • Neurology
  • High Dependency Unit-
  • Friends Stroke Unit
  • Frank Cooksey and Ontario Neuro-Rehabilitation Units (located at Orpington Hospital).
FRCU is a 15-bed, medium-stay unit. As founder-members of the London Specialised Neuro -Rehabilitation Consortium (LSNRC) we are commissioned to provide an intensive, goal-focussed multi-disciplinary program, designed to help patients aged 16 and above return to the community from acute care.

FCRU offers expertise in:
  • Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Nursing
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Clinical Neuro-psychology
FCRU complements the Ontario Ward which also provides Neuro-Rehabilitation beds and step-down beds, also based at Orpington Hospital.

As you develop and progress within the role you will be expected to work towards and then be signed off as competent in taking charge of the ward on shifts and providing peer support to students and junior staff.

In return we are able to offer the opportunity to work as part of a dynamic specialist nursing team in a modern working environment, with strong peer support and access to excellent educational opportunities such as the neuroscience foundation course from six months onwards and Neuroscience Nursing course thereafter.

Rotation is offered through the Neuro Foundation Course.

Main duties and responsibilities:
  • To practice within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to this at all times
  • To assess, plan and evaluate individualised programmes of care for patients in partnership with the patient, career and MDT
  • To support and assist in the health education of patient and families
  • To ensure care is delivered in accordance with the latest evidence-based practice guidelines
  • To maintain up to date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC and legal requirements
  • To support junior colleagues, students and visitors to the department
  • To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and relative/carers, thereby acting as positive role model for nurses and staff
  • To participate in Trust and Division initiatives to develop nursing practice
  • To manage an agreed workload with support from colleagues and senior staff as appropriate
  • To ensure that all Trust and local policies, protocols and procedures are adhered to by colleagues as appropriate
  • To participate in reflection & Clinical Supervision sessions as provided
  • To observe personal responsibility for resource management
  • To observe a general duty of care for health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital
  • To achieve a range of clinical competencies as required within the Trust and Division
  • To maintain your own personal and professional development in accordance with NMC requirements and attending mandatory study sessions
