University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint Controls Technicians to develop and expand an already established small specialist team dedicated to the development of building automation, security, other electronic and electro mechanical systems as well as ICT based systems.

This role will be principally based across the large and complex acute hospital estate at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and its satellite sites, although support across the Trust may be required at times.

The Controls Technicians will report to the Estates Officer (Engineering Controls and Automation) and will be supported by Electrical, Mechanical and Building leads who will be responsible for the development of compliance and development in their respective specialist fields.

The successful candidate will need to be able to consider complex issues and conflicting pressures, to deliver the best outcomes to the site, this role will require a self-motivated individual with a multi-disciplinary ability and skills to assess and manage fast moving situations whilst motivating and supporting and developing a team culture and mentality within the workforce.

The nature of this role will require the successful applicant to take part in out of hours working as required for the needs of the Trust and a rostered provision of On Call management.

A continental day shift is being discussed to provide 7 day provision of service but is not in place currently.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

Key duties for this role will be as follows:

Ensuring efficient and effective maintenance and operation of plant, equipment and services controlled and managed by the building energy management and building automation systems.

Deliver planned preventative maintenance system.

Ensuring the safety of plant, equipment and services for which he/she is responsible and safe methods of working as required by the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, COSHH Regulation, Building and Construction Regulations and the Trusts Safety Policy.

Maintaining the records of equipment and services for which he/she is responsible in accordance with statutory requirements.

Ensure directly managed staff comply with Trust policies, procedures and work instructions.

To support the Trusts security manager as required on matters including but not exclusively of door access and CCTV.

To support the Estates Team in matters of ICT systems and networking exclusive to Estates.

To undertake on-call duties as part of the on-call team to ensure that emergencies occurring outside normal hours are attended to.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

City & Guilds of London Institute Certificate in a relevant Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering discipline (E)

Or,

An equivalent qualification such as NVQ Level 3 in a relevant Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering discipline. (E)

Or,

BTEC/ONC in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering (E)

Experience

Essential

Completion of a registered apprenticeship or structured training program in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering (E)

Plus

At least 2 years post training, site experience having demonstrated high versatility and flexibility. (E)

And

Background in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering, installation, alteration, maintenance or fault finding. (E)

Knowledge of a broad range of Mechanical Engineering and Building Services. (E)

Previous experience installing and maintaining and Building Management System(E)

Desirable

Previous experience of working in an acute Hospital environment or similar demanding role. (D)
