Job summary

To provide skilled support to the Occupational Therapy team and assist registered therapy staff to provide an effective and efficient patient centred service.

To support the registered staff in the wheelchair clinic in carrying out assessments, support with administrative tasks, equipment provision and technical support.

The post holder will have a delegated caseload and will work within agreed treatment plans, protocols and policies without direct supervision.

To be a core member of the therapy WHEELS team.

To manage the peripheral stock of equipment within therapies with guidance from the clinical lead, with liaison with key staff and relevant external agencies.

To lead on the daily management of therapy vehicles as guided by the Clinical Lead.

To understand the process of delegation of duties by a registered Therapist and the importance of maintaining competence in order to carry out delegated tasks.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

We have a unique opportunity to work within the Occupational Therapy team at QEHB as a Band 4 Senior Occupational Therapy Assistant.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Good level of written and spoken English (at least GCSE or equivalent)
  • Evidence of personal development related to healthcare.
  • NVQ3 in related health field e.g. Mobility/exercise/equipment or BTec - or evidence of working towards.
  • Hold a valid UK driving license.

Desirable

  • Assistant membership of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience as a Therapy Assistant (Helper under supervision) within an inpatient setting.
  • Able to work independently with guidance.
  • A knowledge of the aims and principles of occupational therapy.
  • An understanding of the implications of illness and disability.
  • Experience of working within an NHS environment.
  • An understanding of safe provision and use of patient equipment and wheelchairs in this area.

Desirable

  • An understanding of health and safety matters relating to this specialist area.

  • Good communication skills, able to communicate via various forms (face: face/ telephone/ written etc.) with patients who have communication difficulties or problems in understanding.
  • Able to communicate complex and sensitive issues (including clinical information) and manage potential barriers to communication.
  • Able to motivate, and negotiate to achieve patient co-operation.
  • Able to work as part of a team and accept delegated tasks from a range of qualified therapists.
  • Able to teach /instruct patients, and staff in specific tasks, either singly or in groups.
  • Able to empathise and reassure.
  • Good organisation and prioritisation skills
  • Good observational skills
  • Able to empathise with and relate to a wide range of patients, carers and staff.
  • Able to work with own initiative and manage own work.
  • Aware of own limitations.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Evidence of good attendance and timekeeping.
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD.
  • Enthusiasm, enjoys working with a wide range of people.
  • Commitment to patient centred care.
  • Reliable and trustworthy.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to work flexibly in order to meet the changing demands of the service.
  • Ability to work weekends as part of a 7 day working pattern (when appropriate service delivery allows and commences)

  • Good record keeping and written reporting skills
