Job overview

The trauma unit at the Queen Elizabeth hospital consists of 2 wards 410 and 412 is one of the largest Major Trauma Centres in the UK and we are recruiting. We are looking for dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated band 4 and band 5 staff. There are new and exciting opportunities for both newly qualified and experienced nurses alike.

Both wards take direct admissions from A&E, outpatients and from other hospitals across the region for major trauma injuries, Ward 412 is also supported by members of the Royal College of Defence Medicine working collaboratively to provide the highest standard of evidence based care.

We aim to provide highly specialised care for a variety of patients with Traumatic injuries, while also working closely with a wide variety of teams and specialities which include; Major Trauma Team, Hands and Plastics, Neurosurgery and Cardio Thoracic.

Our trauma department stands out because of what we do so why not join us? Skills and learning opportunities available to you include specialised trauma care, pre and post-operative management, complex wounds and fractures requiring external fixation and flap reconstruction. We manage pain with the use of PCAs, epidurals and blocks. We will teach and support you on your journey to learn and acquire these skills. Our trauma clinical educator based on our ward is always on hand to help and support you. While the enthusiastic, supportive staff will ensure a smooth transition into our ward environments.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

We are a friendly and diverse team looking for enthusiastic nurses to join us, experience of trauma is not necessary as we can support you with our wonderful clinical nurse specialists and clinical nurse educator.

The successful candidate will be able to manage their time and patients effectively by working on their own initiative as well as working a part of the wider team. Our aim is to deliver excellent nursing care, prioritising safety while being able to communicate the needs of the patient with a wider MDT.

The ideal candidate will utilise up to date knowledge and evidence to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the patient centred care. Also achieve and maintain competence in mandatory and statutory training, while developing new clinical skills, to take on responsibilities such as acting as a link nurse and apply skills learned to the clinical area to provide the best care to our patients. Working in accordance to the NMC professional standards of practice and be accountable for your own professional actions.

With any role within the Queen Elizabeth hospital Birmingham this post come with the support of our trauma team and specialist nurses who are there to offer help and support. While we will ensure you have the relevant skills by providing you with opportunities to progress and develop your future aspirations within trauma.

Qualifications

Essential

GCSE or equivalent to Level 2 Functional Skills Maths & English

NMC registered Nursing Associate

Level 5 Foundation Degree In Health & Care associated with Nursing Associate training

Experience

Essential

Evidence of working in a multidisciplinary and cross agency work environment under appropriate supervision as part of a multidisciplinary team

Experience of providing and receiving complex sensitive information

Experience of managing / prioritising own case load / workload, using initiative

Competent in a range of clinical skills and practices relevant to the scope of practice required

Experience in delegating duties to others

Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate

Understanding of the scope of the role of the Nursing Associate in context of the nursing and interdisciplinary team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development

Understanding and acts within NMC professional standards of practice contained within the NMC code of conduct

Understanding of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity Awareness of health and safety issues

Has knowledge in relation to the parameters and scope of practice in which the post holder should work and when to seek advice and support/ escalate of others for expert help and advice

Willingness to take on new skills and develop scope of practice

Can articulate and understanding of the importance of following Policy / Procedure , guidelines and care and treatment plans
