Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated individual to join our friendly team to allow us to provide a high quality and efficient Microbiology diagnostic service for our patients and service users. You will be working alongside a team of Medical laboratory assistants, Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists and full training will be provided.

The post holders would be working 37.5 hours/week within the current shift systems; weekdays 09:00-17:30 core hours, late shift 12-20:00, weekends and bank holidays rostered 09:00 -17:00.

You will be expected to work throughout all of sections of the department on a rotational basis. The laboratory is accredited for training with the IBMS and HCPC.

Main Duties include:
Receipt and sorting of samples that arrive in the department

Supporting the role of the Biomedical Scientists (BMS) within the Microbiology department.

Pre-analytical preparation of specimens.

Data entry of patient information/request forms onto the laboratory information systems.

Telephone enquiries and results service

Assisting with keeping the laboratory clean and tidy, autoclaving and housekeeping duties.

Training of new MLA in the department

  • Work throughout all of sections of the department on a rotational basis
  • Work a mixture of day and late shifts, and weekend and bank holidays
  • Be responsible for the reception/data entry and processing of clinical specimens, these may include a range of swabs, body fluids, and blood samples
  • Be involved in setting up a range of routine automated and manual laboratory tests
  • Assist with the quality management of the laboratory (for example quality control procedures and audit as required)
