Job description

Outpatients has a unique role for Healthcare assistants. Although a clinical role is necessary, the role has evolved since covid and is now both clinical and clerical. The role is:

To provide and maintain excellent standards of nursing care to an allocated group of patients, under the supervision of a registered nurse.

To carry out care and treatment tasks, delegated from professionally qualified staff, requiring a wide range of technical ability, numeracy and literacy skills as well as an excellent level of interpersonal skills.

To supervise, less experienced/new Health Care Assistants in the clinical area ensuring patient focused care is provided.

To provide any administrative and clerical support to the team.

To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any areas specified.

To ensure the efficient running of the outpatient department continues. To work within the outpatient team to perform clinical and clerical work, including venopuncture, observations, ECGs, administrative duties and clinic preparation for future clinics.

Carry out tasks in delivering and supporting direct patient care with the support of a registered nurse. Able to demonstrate abilities and competencies gained to enable tasks to be delegated from professionally qualified staff.

Able to perform more complex aspects of patient care, some with indirect supervision, eg, taking and recording or observations, taking of venous blood samples and cannulating as directed, in checking and preparing equipment and preparing patients for treatment.

Preparing clinics for Clinicians ensuring all tests results are available and clinics are in good order.

Keep clinical areas clean and tidy and maintain a safe, pleasant environment.

Adhere to departmental and Directorate procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.

Assist in the restocking of supplies and maintenance of equipment.

Be aware of and adhere to the Trust Policies and Procedures.

Under supervision contribute to and participate in the process of setting of goals and benchmarking standards of care.

Identify and report clinical risks to the ward manager so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.

Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.

To actively promote a healthy lifestyle for patients.
