Apprentice HCA – Tropical Lagoon

Our busy Children’s Department covers two sites – Queens Hospital in Romford and King George’s Hospital in Ilford. We deliver a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services to our local population and have an inpatient ward, one with a co-located 4 bedded High Dependency Unit (HDU), two Children and Young People Assessment Units (CYPAU) one at each site, a day unit with a Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) and haematology service, two outpatient departments with a GP ‘hot clinic’, a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Children’s Community Nursing team.

Our 25 cot level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is soon to be expanded to 35 cots and has community and outreach teams to support babies on discharge.

We have two Emergency Department’s (ED) for children, one on each site, and the Romford ED is among the busiest in the country with over 155,000 children’s attendances each year.

Applications are invited for the Apprentice Healthcare Assistant (HCA) for Tropical Lagoon ward at Queen's Hospital. The post holder will assist in the provision of high quality, holistic care to children, young people, and their families by working effectively as members of the multi-disciplinary team. This involves providing care to children and young people under the direct supervision and direction of registered children's nurses. We are looking for an individual, who possesses excellent communication skills is hardworking, reliable, and dedicated with good organisational skills. The post holder must be able to work flexibly, unsupervised and must be resilient under pressure.

As this is an apprenticeship post alongside learning the job role you will be completing the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship – children and young people pathway.

To be eligible for this apprenticeship post you must meet the criteria below:

  • Be over 18 years old
  • Be able to work in the UK without any restriction (e.g., have a valid visa for the duration of the apprenticeship)
  • Have been lawfully living in the United Kingdom or any other member state of the EEA for the last 3 years
PLEASE NOTE: Although this post is initially offered as a fixed term contract, the post will become permanent on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

All new staff contract to posts at the Trust will be subject to a 6-month probationary period. This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the culture and working environment of the Trust.

The post holder will assist the Ward Manager in the provision of a clean, well maintained ward area with effective stock ordering and rotation, appropriate management and escalation of equipment and estates issues which require attention or repair together with effective escalation of concerns related to cleaning and catering.

Under the leadership of our Chair, Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive we provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south-west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic and Harold Wood Polyclinic.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and this will be one of the many benefits of our closer collaboration with Barts Health. Working with them and with all our partners across north east London, we will find a sustainable solution to enhance patient care.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
