The Balancing Costs team is a new team being set up within National Control in response to the rapid increase in balancing costs in the last three years. The team will be accountable for:


  • Ensuring the ESO has a coordinated plan to manage balancing costs and work with other teams to ensure that this is implemented, providing the narrative on this plan to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leading Balancing Cost related improvement activities within and across the ESO; managing and prioritising the backlog of improvement ideas.
  • The Balancing Costs Data scientist will support this newly established team in the following ways:
  • Work with large internal and external databases to mine, clean and analyse data, and creating exploratory tools or models, using python and SQL
  • Identify trends and insights which with enable the team to deliver on the objectives of the balancing costs strategy.
  • Ensure integrity, accuracy, and transparency across all the aspects of the data use. Assure quality control for all the processes and data and improve overall quality by enhancing optimisation, tooling, and testing.
  • Communicate findings by creating clear, concise, and visually appealing data dashboards and visualisations accompanied by clear commentary on its impact and potential to internal stakeholders.
  • Construct customer-facing reporting tools to provide insights and metrics.
  • Collaborate with the team to evolve and build the balancing costs strategy based on the findings of your analysis.
  • Identify areas of innovation and improvement in how we collect and utilise data to form an improved view of balancing costs
  • Collaborate with internal teams on all data analytics going on across the ESO that is related to balancing cost.

This role will be based in Warwick or Wokingham. We continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. This is a full-time role, and we offer flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities


  • Provide the analytical evidence and insights needed to support delivery of the ESO’s strategic commitments on balancing costs under our RIIO2 business plan
  • Provide new cost infographics that will form the content of Internal Balancing Costs Hub with the possibility of being published externally
  • Grow and improve the data analytics capability within the team and in the wider ESO

About You


  • Excellent data extraction and analytical data science skills: whether in Python, C/C++, SQL, or other programming language
  • Some knowledge or experience using data lakes e.g., Azure
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) including data visualisation techniques.
  • Ability to problem solve and innovate with complex and incomplete datasets
  • A team player and eager to learn

This role offers a competitive salary between £48,000 - £60,000 per annum dependant on capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
