
AUP Fine Art Studio Residency at KARST Contemporary Arts Plymouth, England

Arts University Plymouth (AUP) is delighted to announce a partnership with KARST (www.karst.org.uk) in Plymouth, UK to offer a free studio space to a 2023 BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate as part of a new AUP Karst Studio Residency programme.
The successful BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate applicant will have a shared studio at KARST with a graduate from Bath Spa University from 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024.
In addition to workspace there will be access to visiting artists, galleries and curators and you’ll benefit from peer-to-peer exchange with KARST’s active community of 16 studio artists and the wider context such as the associates network CAMP (Contemporary Art Membership Plymouth).
This is a fantastic opportunity to launch your career as a contemporary artist. The selected graduate will also receive £300 at the start of their residency to help with materials and set up costs!
About KARST
KARST is the largest independent contemporary art venue in Plymouth, comprising a free public gallery space and artists’ studios. It was founded in 2012 in the industrial Millbay area of the city and aims to be a testbed for experimentation: from conceptually complex group shows proposed by international curators to projects focussing on individual artists or artistic collaboration.

- Residency dates are 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024 and are non-negotiable.

To apply, you are asked to submit the following below through this application form:
- An artist's statement (max 2 pages) in PDF format
- A single PDF document (max 6 pages) with up to six images of your work
- A formal letter of application (max 500 words) answering the following questions:
- How you would use your time at KARST Studios and why it would be significant at this point in your career.
- How you intend to support yourself financially during the residency. If this includes applying for grants, KARST is happy to advise on any funding applications.
- A recent CV which includes any up to date exhibitions or projects
KARST Studios is a dedicated production space with 17 studios, supporting an active community of contemporary artists working in the city. A capital programme to install heating throughout the building and upgrade spaces and facilities was completed in March 2021. The studio complex includes designated studios, a project/workshop space, library, technical resources, kitchen facilities and communal areas. KARST is committed to providing opportunity for artists at all stages of their careers: from recent graduates, emerging and mid-career artists to those established and working at an international level. Studio artists are integral to the development of KARST and play an important part in contributing to the organisation’s growing presence.
