About our Team:

The Global Information Services directorate at Heriot-Watt University provides a range of services to support, promote and supply information, information skills and infrastructure to support a modern research-intensive university in a global setting.  This straddles academic library provision alongside a range of technical services and systems such as IT and AV services, systems and support for learning & teaching, research & enterprise, operational effectiveness.

It is an integrated global service, providing services to students, staff, applicants, alumni, external users across all five campuses based in Edinburgh, Galashiels, Orkney, Dubai, and Malaysia.

The AV Team, sit within Academic and Learner Services, part of the Global Information Services Directorate, and support and manage a range of Audio-Visual services across the Edinburgh campus.

Purpose of Role:

The role holder is responsible for configuration and maintenance of audio-visual systems at Heriot-Watt University.

The role holder works within a team which provides planned and emergency technical support to users of university learning, teaching, meeting, and event venues, in person, in venue and remotely using online management & monitoring systems.

The main focus of the role will be on IT aspects of AV system design, configuration, maintenance, and support, including IP address management, network device configurations, AV over IP, and USB3.0/USB4.0 utilisation. The role holder will work closely with the IS Network & Desktop Development Teams and with other relevant IT colleagues.

The role holder will assist with the technical planning, development and provision of modern learning, teaching, and meeting facilities for Heriot Watt by helping to test, program, configure and manage a large fleet of audio, video, control and communications equipment.

Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with the planning, design, installation, and testing of AV systems via the provision of system diagrams/drawings, cable schedules, infrastructural specifications for contractors, etc. Includes the preparation of technical drawings & documentation to support new or replacement learning, teaching, and meeting facilities at Heriot Watt.
  • Providing technical support for customers using learning, teaching, meeting, and event facilities and responding to technical queries/issues/faults at Edinburgh and Scottish Borders Campuses as promptly as resources allow, either on site or remotely via IP.
  • Working in conjunction with IS IT colleagues to ensure the continued health of various IT based AV management systems at Heriot-Watt University.
  • Responsibility for various AV specific IT administration tasks. For example, maintaining AV IP records via the Infoblox IP management platform.
  • Assisting with ongoing evaluation of technical solutions to support learning, teaching, and meeting facilities at Heriot Watt, including assisting with the technical evaluation of IP and USB connected devices, wireless AV connectivity and AV over IP protocols.
  • Ensuring compliance with agreed H&S procedures, HW AV best practices and relevant technical standards, and assisting with the further progression and adoption of AV best practice and technical standards within the AV team and more widely within IS.
  • Assist in the effort to enhance services to our customers by endeavouring to work collaboratively and more closely with colleagues elsewhere in IS and/or in schools to better support the global learning community and contribute to relevant areas of skills development provision. Participate in relevant IS projects and support any new strategic direction evolved by the University.

Education, Qualifications & Experience:

Essential

  • Educated to Highers/A level standard (or equivalent)
  • 3-5 years' experience delivering and/or supporting Audio Visual facilities
  • Working knowledge of basic network services and protocols relevant to modern AV systems
  • Competent in the use of relevant Microsoft Office suite
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-function and multi-task as part of a busy AV first line team
  • Ability to make decisions and prioritise workloads and requests on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
  • Experience of working in a team and leading on own initiative
  • Demonstrable professional and proactive approach

Desirable

  • Experience of Higher Education
  • Familiarity with Teams and SharePoint
  • Experience of helpdesk ticketing system
  • Experience of supporting events
  • Relevant AV Organisation Qualification (e.g. AVIXA CTS or Dante Level 3)
