Newly Qualified Social Worker
£36,138 - £43,815 per annum + £3,000 Market Supplement
About the Role
Newham’s Adult Social Care Directorate is offering Newly Qualified Social Worker’s the opportunity to make real and lasting change for the Borough’s residents, whilst developing their own skills in assessment, support planning and strengths based practice.
Although experience of working within Adult Services will be beneficial, we welcome applicants who have undertaken work in Children and Young People’s services and can evidence their transferable skillset.
As a newly qualified Social Worker, you will hold a reduced case load where you will implement short – long term interventions, utilising a strengths based approach to ensure that independence and wellbeing is promoted in the community. Social Workers will routinely undertake social care assessments, reviews and support planning, mental capacity assessments, Continuing Health Care decision support tools and safeguarding enquiries when necessary. As you develop your skillset through the ASYE you will have the opportunity to engage in more complex situations, including making applications to the Court of Protection.
Whilst completing the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment, you will initially receive weekly supervision (progressing to monthly supervision as your knowledge and experience grow), peer supervision and access to shadowing and training opportunities.
About you
You will be passionate about promoting the independence and quality of life for adults and their families, with a keen interest in promoting independence and wellbeing. You will approach situations in a creative, yet pragmatic, manner by focusing on people’s strengths.
You will have an understanding of completing statutory work as per the Care Act 2014 and Mental Capacity Act 2005, and have awareness of other pertinent legislation (Mental Health Act 1983 / 2007, Human Rights Act 1998, Equalities Act 2010). You will appreciate that people’s complex needs are not always best funded by Adult Social Care, and will have an understanding of applying for funding through Continuing Health Care, Funded Nursing Care and other funding pathways.
You will have previous experience and an understanding of working within a diverse community and share our ambition and energy in embracing new ways of working. You are always open to learning, and helping others to learn, so that the people you support benefit from the very best practice. You have high working standards and are conscious of your own professional development and the potential that comes with this. You really want to develop yourself and be the best practitioner you can be.
We’re looking for people who have a genuine interest in a strengths based practice drawing on creative and systemic thinking to inform your approach to promoting health, wellbeing and independence in the community.

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
