The Blood Sciences department of the Queens Hospital Burton site within Derbyshire Pathology are introducing a new role of an Associate Practitioner to work flexibly across the disciplines of Haematology/Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry.

Our modern laboratories run a busy 24/7 service and are well equipped with a Sysmex XN series analysers and track, Starrsed RS ESR analyser and Werfen ACL TOP analysers in Haematology & Coagulation; Roche Cobas 8000 analysers, TOSOH G11, Advanced Instrument Osmometer and a PVT pre analytics module in Biochemistry and Ortho Visions in Blood Transfusion.

You will become part of an AP team across Blood Sciences to assist with day-to-day duties in those areas dependent on service need. This is an exciting opportunity to gain a wealth of experience and knowledge, whilst demonstrating your adaptable and reliable nature.

The candidate will be expected to participate in 24/7 shift working including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Ideally candidates should have a Foundation degree in Science (Skill level 5), IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I & II or an equivalent qualification. However, consideration will be given to candidates working towards arelevant qualification.

Specimen receipt, booking and processing using various pieces of equipment as well as maintenance of laboratory equipment are key elements of this role.

A flexible approach is required; you will be working a shift rota to ensure that the service is covered which will include 24/7 working where your skills will be utilised in a multi-disciplinary way. You will receive training to allow you undertake the full duties of the AP role, ensuring your technical expertise is put to good use.

Demonstrable previous paid pathology laboratory experience is essential. You must be adaptable and have the ability to work within a vibrant and professional team as well as autonomously coping with the pressures of a busy, exciting and frequently challenging and constantly changing environment.

  • Sample receipt and booking in during out-of-hours shifts
  • Communicate test results by telephone and/or in writing and to service users, giving advice on sample/specimens and the tests to be performed.
  • To have a broad knowledge of routine and non-routine Blood Sciences duties.
  • To perform initial sample testing producing routine test results using both complex automated equipment and manual technology.
  • Comply with standard operating procedures and policies, proposing changes as appropriate.
  • Be responsible for the safe use of laboratory equipment, including basic equipment quality standardisation and maintenance.
  • Contribute to the ordering of stock items maintaining adequate levels.
  • To supervise junior/support staff, providing clinical supervision and training less experienced staff.
  • Keep a formal record of test results and interrogate test results produced by others on the Laboratory Information system.
