Job Description
Background
The European Project Finance & Infrastructure (“PFI”) team works in a fast paced and dynamic environment. The role promises to be varied and interesting covering the breadth of the ever-growing infrastructure and renewables market with an evolving learning curve that requires enthusiasm, dedication, a willingness to learn and good communication skills.
The PFI team is reflective of CIBC’s global values in terms of its diversity and inclusiveness and this role will provide an excellent enhancement to an individual who has a minimum of 3-4 year’s work experience within the European Project Finance Renewables and Infrastructure sectors.
The PFI team is active in a wide range of multi-faceted segments including, Transport assets (Ports, Rail, Airports), Transmission Networks, District Heating and increasingly Digital. As a result, we cover a substantial part of the Core and Core+ Infrastructure market. This is in addition to Renewables based platforms and Asset Level Project Financings in both Onshore (Wind & Solar) and Offshore (greenfield & brownfield).
League table performance has been elevated in recent years across the European platform, and the CIBC PFI team has an outsized market presence vis a vis our scale and footprint in our chosen sectors. This team sits in one of the most active North American Banks in the UK and European market from a capital deployment perspective.
Purpose of Job
The Associate will be expected to use a broad range of analytical and research skills to support all the professionals within the PFI team. They will assist more senior colleagues in the execution and origination of transactions to deepen our Sponsor, Corporate and Borrower relationships in the Project Finance and Infrastructure markets across the UK and Europe.
Main Objectives & Requirements of the Role
For new opportunities and refinancings, review RFP’s and IM’s, due diligence materials and legal documentation, prepare and co-ordinate questions / comments / responses. Interface with external advisers as necessary (e.g., technical, commercial, financial, insurance and legal) as well as the necessary internal stakeholders / partners.- Assist more senior colleagues in preparing detailed documents including business proposals, memoranda, credit and business approval requests, loan recommendations, and company information documents and reports for various purposes.
- Assist with preparation of presentation materials including structuring and co-ordination mandates / pitchbooks, this includes liaising with teams across the Bank (e.g., Investment Banking, Debt Capital Markets and Trading Floor) to organise and prepare pitch books.
Assist more senior colleagues on the execution of structuring co-ordinator mandates including liaising with banks, external legal counsels, DD advisors, preparing marketing materials, desktop ratings analysis etc.
- Responsible for reviewing and developing financial models required for analysing lending / underwriting opportunities and executing / pitching on structuring / co-ordinator roles.
- Responsible for both quantitative and qualitative client analysis and industry research.
- Attend investor presentation days and calls, in addition to client meetings supporting more senior colleagues.
- Assist in executing all facets of the group’s objectives, including preparing amendment and waiver requests and undertake annual reviews for existing Borrowers.
- Help maintain group databases including electronic records and other reports.
- Must be able to accept flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete daily and weekly work assignments.
- The role of an Associate is challenging and fast-paced. It requires enthusiasm to learn more about the industries covered which are multi-faceted in the Infrastructure and Project Finance sectors as well as a sincere interest in the clients covered, and a strong work ethic.
Skills & Knowledge Required
Undergraduate degree in finance, economics, science, engineering or any other complementary discipline, or the candidate should have robust evidence of the required experience and skills in their career to date.- Strong financial analysis and modelling skills to facilitate a keen understanding of any business and financial proposition from a client, as well as being able to run downside scenarios / sensitivities as part of the credit analysis process.
- Good understanding of the external rating agencies (S&P / Moody’s / Fitch) methodologies to undertake desktop ratings analysis.
- Good knowledge of business, accounting, economics, and finance acquired through either education and /or experience. Prior credit analysis experience is required.
- Strong technical and MS Office skills (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Service oriented approach when dealing with colleagues and product partners internally and clients and advisers externally.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to explain loan recommendations and results of detailed analyses. As experience grows, defend recommendations to internal business and credit committees.
- The ability to work within a demanding and dynamic environment.
- Good ability to multi-task between diverse types of work from written to financial modelling as well as across different clients and sectors / businesses.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the assessment of unstructured problems.
- Superior analytical and quantitative skills.
- A proven academic track record with unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation.
