The Centre for International Experience (CIE) sits within the Division of Student Life and the Office of Vice President International. Working in partnership with faculties and services, CIE seeks to enable international students to maximize their time at U of T and to meet their goals and aspirations on graduation as well as to provide all U of T students with opportunities so they can expand their learning into the global arena. We work with students, academic units, local and global community to create sustainable and diverse learning abroad experiences that incorporate study, research and professional opportunities. CIE enables students to expand their world to gain a global advantage. Finally, we work to build global learning opportunities on campus curricular, co-curricular and experiential.
Your opportunity:
The University of Toronto, as a strategic priority, works to enable international students to manage their success and meet their goals while being students at the University of Toronto. Under the general direction of the Senior Director, Global Learning and International Student Success, you provide leadership and direct management for the following staff groupings within CIE: International Student Experience, International Scholars Support, Global Fluency Programs and the Resource and Information Hub. As a member of the CIE leadership team, you will work across portfolios to maximize team resources in meeting unit objectives.
You are responsible for internal partnership development, including with students, and relationship building to support the international student experience and global fluency strategic priorities. You will develop a range of programs, resources and services to enhance the international student experience and to enable all students to build global fluencies through on campus programming both curricular and co-curricular. Where viable, you will enable embedded services for international students throughout Student Life and with Divisions to maximize the University’s ability to enable international students to successfully settle in Canada, fully partake in their program of study and to become full members of the University community.
Working with the Senior Director, the CIE Leadership team and key stakeholders, you will lead administrative processes, business review processes, success strategies and establish programming and service practices in line with U of T policy and priorities. You will be directly responsible for managing up to 10 unionized employees, as well as student workstudy and casual student staff; preparing and managing the budgets for each program; overseeing programming initiatives ensuring that the desired learning and programming outcomes are achieved and managing the staff supporting the various units.
Working with the CIE Leadership team, you assist the Senior Director in the overall operations of the CIE including the development and implementation of professional development training for the full department and the management of internal team communications, budget forecasting and review and building needs.
In the absence of the Senior Director and the Director, Learning and Safety Abroad you may be the Acting Senior Director, Global Learning Opportunities and International Student Success.
Your responsibilities will include:
Identifying and developing new initiatives that promote CIE’s mandate and vision. This includes making recommendations the Senior Director on international scholarship opportunities and global fluencies programming for the University that align to its strategic goals.- Leading the strategic planning process for the ISEGFP portfolio in support of the Senior Director.
- Developing assessment strategies for the ISEGFP portfolio.
- Managing the operations, policy development, and staff training for the ISEGFP portfolio.
- Providing leadership and direct supervision for the following staff groupings within CIE: International Scholarship Programs (e.g. Pearson, Laidlaw, Karta and others), Resource and Information Hub, International Student Experience programming team and Global Fluency Programs.
- In cooperation with the Senior Director, Director, and Associate Director, resolving escalated and/or sensitive issues or concerns to identify options and appropriate course of action.
- Developing and monitoring budgets for all areas under her/his management. Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the overall CIE budget.
- Developing new programs related to international student and scholar experience and global fluency development for all students.
- Exploring opportunities to enhance the international student experience aligned with the Universities goals in the International Strategy. These include opportunities for experiential learning and the development of global competencies.
- Exploring opportunities to enhance the development of global fluencies for all U of T students; including but not limited to Global Citizenship co-curricular programming, supporting academic divisions in the designation of Global Scholars specializations and the implementation of the tri-campus minor in Global Leadership.
Qualifications:
Graduate degree in relevant area: international relations, student development, adult education required or acceptable equivalent of education and experience.- Minimum of eight years related experience in a university environment, working with international students in a Canadian higher education sector with experience experiential learning or student success.
- A minimum of five years of team management and working with external and internal stakeholders.
- Experience in developing and/or delivering post-secondary education strategy, programs, and services.
- Experience in working with university policy and regulations, internal and external partnership development and large-scale program development moving from initiation to growth and steady state.
- Knowledge of current best practices and emerging trends as pertaining to global learning essential.
- Demonstrated ability as an action-oriented, systems thinker and relationship builder.
- Highly developed communication skills (verbal and written); research skills; strong diplomacy and advocacy skills, demonstrated ability and tact in working with senior administrators (internal and external organizations), effective team player.
- Must demonstrate superior organizational skills and a proven ability to multi-task and work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to prioritize work; deal with multiple demands with time-sensitive pressure, work under constant pressure and stress.
- Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, to deal with matters of extreme sensitivity and confidentiality
- Demonstrated proactive approach to program implementation and problem solving
- Demonstrated commitment to optimization of work efficiency and rationalization of procedures.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed essential.
- Experience living abroad or moving across national borders an asset.
- Experience supervising in a unionized environment an asset.
- Excellent computer skills e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, email, data management system. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
