Job description
This is an exciting opportunity to earn while you learn. You’ll be supported by your line manager, apprenticeship development manager, skills coach and the data analyst community, as well as fellow apprentices on the programme, so you will have plenty sources of encouragement and support to help you succeed.
This is a permanent position; you will be given 20% off the job training to allow you to complete your apprenticeship within your working hours. Typically, the apprenticeship will run for 18-24 months.
As a Associate Data Analyst Apprentice you will collect, organise and study data to provide business insight, recognising the potential for automation of business processes and improvements in information systems and feed these into the programme/portfolio process to enable resource to be appropriately allocated, with a focus on not just the business needs, but the end user also.
You will keep up-to-date with changes to user habits, preferences and behaviours across various digital platforms and understand the implications for successful delivery of government digital services.

In this role you will:
- Assist with the development of complex and high-profile analytical products.
- Manage competing demands and priorities
- Collaborate with the business to effectively identify and clarify the overall scope and requirements of analytical work.
- Analyse multiple datasets to produce clear findings.
- Identify and share best practice.
- Ensure products meet our quality standards.
- Effectively translate technical concepts into non-technical language and communicate when required to internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide regular progress updates on your analysis, keeping stakeholders informed.
Person specification
Essential Criteria:
We are looking for someone who:
- Data visualisation - Can use software to manipulate and analyse data, for example, using Excel or other software to merge, analyse, visualise, and consolidate data using pivot tables, functions, and charts.
- Data modelling, cleansing and enrichment - Has an awareness of analytical techniques and tools (e.g., SQL, data analysis, statistics, forecasting or modelling) and how they might be applied to business problems.
- Communication – Has an awareness of the need to translate technical concepts into non-technical language and communicate. You can understand what communication is required with internal and external stakeholders.
- Is comfortable learning to use new tools and large datasets.
- Has good organisation, attention to detail and prioritisation skills.
- Can work in a team and collaborate.
You must also hold one of the following:

Level 3 qualification (apprenticeship/A-levels/BTEC, etc) OR equivalent work experience (typically two years in a relevant role)
PLUS: - 5 GCSEs (or other equivalent), including English and Maths at Grade 4 (C) or above – or be willing to complete a level 2 English and Maths functional skills qualification.

This post is a permanent position within HM Revenue & Customs.
All apprentices who meet the scheme’s milestones will receive a Level 4 apprenticeship qualification in Data Analysis.

Following the application closing date, you may be invited to an assessment centre. The assessment centre will be a 2-stage process consisting of an interview, paired/group exercise and presentation. This will be delivered virtually via Microsoft Teams. The assessment centre will be conducted by staff from HMRC, focusing on experience and strengths of the candidates.
Interviews will focus on the candidates’ application, their knowledge, experience and competence, and the essential criteria required.
