We are now recruiting for an Assistant Telecommunication Technician to join our Telecommunication team in Poplar. Under the guidance of the Team Leader, the post holder will be expected to deliver a high quality, safe and efficient railway service by the effective and timely maintenance of DLR’s Communications equipment and assets.
Purpose of Job
- To carry out maintenance as directed by the Communications Team Leader, the maintenance schedule and any member of the management team.
- To assist the telecoms technicians in carrying out preventative and corrective maintenance on Communications equipment, such as but not limited to, CCTV, LLPA, Fibre Optic Systems and Radio as required, to an appropriate high standard of safety and reliability.
- To install, test and commission asset modifications and minor new works as and when required
- To deliver excellent customer service and customer relations, to both internal customers and when working on and about the railway, to passengers.
Key Accountabilities
- Safe and effective delivery of maintenance, ensuring that there is a positive influence on delivery of reliable services and an excellent customer interface.
- To maintain professional engineering and maintenance standards in preventative, corrective and modification work to assets.
- Responsibility for ensuring that all activities and process undertaken by colleagues and contractors are organised and conducted with complete consideration to reducing safety risks, both within their own operating environments and the railway as a whole, to ALARP principles.
- To recommend measures to improve asset performance and reduce maintenance costs or response times.
- Participating in a strong safety culture to ensure that suitable technical standards and maintenance practices are observed, such that all legal and statutory requirements (including the requirements of the Safety Case) are adhered to.
- The Assistant Communications Technicians maybe required work on a rotating shift basis covering at least peak operating hours, although an element of flexibility will be expected.
- The job holder may be requested to attend outside their normal working hours (including weekends) in order to respond to an operational requirement, a planned shutdown, emergency interruption to railway service, an incident, or an emergency.
- The job holder will be required to work outside in all weather conditions.
- The jobholder will be required to make a decision when equipment or assets are in an unsafe condition and apply appropriate restrictions on their usage.
- All decisions must comply with relevant statutory requirements, company policy and published rules and procedures.
- Tasks will be assigned and reviewed by the CRT, Communications Team Leader and Communications Manager or, in some instances, the Communications Engineer.
- Tasks may also be requested by other Managers, where they have identified a scenario that is causing, or will lead to, the failure of equipment or assets.
- The job holder will proactively identify scenarios that are causing, or will lead to, the failure of equipment or assets, and undertake to resolve them themselves, where appropriate.
- The post holder will be judged on consistent delivery of objectives.
- Performance feedback and assessment will be provided by the Team Leader
Essential/Desirable Skills/Qualifications
- The job holder will have a minimum of 3 years’ experience of maintaining communications equipment.
- The jobholder must have the ability to communicate effectively, explaining the cause and effect of the status and failure of equipment and assets, to all levels of the organisation.
- The Jobholder must hold a full current driving licence.
- Flexibility to meet the requirements of shift work.
