Job description

The Mental Health Treatment Requirement (MHTR) pathway of the Black Country Health and Justice Service provides psychological assessments and interventions to people with mental health difficulties who have come into contact with criminal justice services and whose offences may attract a community or suspended sentence order. The team aims to prevent short term custodial sentences and reduce reoffending by improving access to psychological interventions and addressing underlying mental health problems, thereby improving health and social outcomes for the individual and their family. As a member of the team you will be responsible for undertaking assessments, formulating service users’ needs and delivering psychological interventions, under the supervision of a qualified Practitioner Psychologist. You will also be responsible for liaising with Criminal Justice colleagues; preparing and submitting regular data returns and supporting training regarding MHTR’s for partner organisations. This post is based in the Black Country and you will need to travel to a range of venues across the Black Country and the West Midlands on occasion.

You will: Undertake protocol based psychological assessments of service users including self-report measures, rating scales and semi-structured interviews

  • Assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment of a service user’s problems, including simple procedures and techniques related to psychological therapies
  • Communicate and liaise with other disciplines involved in the service user’s care
  • Assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all service users
  • Attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings
  • Prepare assessment reports
  • Provide advice, guidance and support to service users to enhance awareness of their psychological needs

Working as part of the wider Criminal Justice Services Directorate you will:
  • Work with service users and other professionals in community settings, including local Courts, Probation Offices and mental health resource centres
  • Undertake assessment, formulation and delivery of psychological interventions under the supervision of a qualified Practitioner Psychologist
  • Ensure that robust procedures are maintained for ensuring service users’ informed consent is gained and recorded
  • Ensure robust assessment procedures are maintained using agreed psychometric assessments
  • Liaise with colleagues in other services delivering MHTR’s to ensure continued professional development and implementation of best practice
  • Ensure that end of treatment reviews and post treatment follow up are completed
  • Ensure that accurate data returns are completed in line with agreed schedules
  • Undertake risk assessment and support the risk management of individual service users
Qualifications and training
  • A First or Upper Second Class Honours degree in psychology or a lower Second degree with a post-graduate qualification (e.g. Master’s degree)
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
Experience

You will have experience of:
  • Face-to-face work with people with mental health problems (including mental illness and personality disorder), learning disabilities and/or offending behaviour
  • Working in a healthcare setting
  • Using psychological assessments, formulations, risk assessments and care planning
  • Working in a Multi-disciplinary Team and/or working with the voluntary sector
Knowledge

You will have:
  • High level communication skills (written and verbal)
  • An understanding of the needs of people with a diagnosis of Personality Disorder/mental illness/learning disability
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to service users in a way that addresses psychological resistance
  • An understanding of psychology applied to healthcare
  • An understanding of the impact of trauma and a label of personality disorder
  • Experience using computers for compiling databases or data-analysis
  • Training and experience of audit, evaluation and/or research methods
