An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist to join the adult inpatient wards, at Northwick Park Mental Health Unit, Harrow. The successful candidate will join an established psychology team, passionate about providing high quality care for adults experiencing acute distress/ mental health crisis.

The Assistant Psychologist will play an integral role in supporting the delivery of psychological care to adults admitted to Eastlake and Ferneley Wards (Northwick Park Mental Health Unit, Harrow).

Main duties of the role will include;

  • Psychological screening
  • Delivery of stabilisation interventions in a 1:1 and group format
  • Preparing clinical background information for Team Formulation meetings
  • Supporting the facilitation of staff training
  • Service evaluation

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

1. Working independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified psychologist and within the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures.
2. The gathering of clinically relevant background information to support the facilitation of trauma-informed Team Formulation meetings for the inpatient wards.
3. Psychological screening with adult inpatients.
4. Facilitation and delivery of trauma-informed psychological stabilisation interventions; both group and individual. To co-facilitate groups with both psychology and non-psychology colleagues when appropriate.
5. To attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings.

Teaching, training, and supervision
1. To receive regular clinical professional supervision from the Clinical Psychologist and
where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
2. To attend weekly trauma-informed training sessions and develop knowledge in this area.
3. To attend weekly trauma-informed Team Formulation sessions and develop knowledge in
this area.
4. To support with the development and facilitation of trauma-informed training and
resources.
5. To develop skills and competencies that assist in the delivery of current duties .

Research and service evaluation
1. To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the clinical care on the
adult inpatient wards through research, service evaluation and audit.
2. To undertake searches of evidence-based literature and research using the internet and
online databases.
3. To undertake clinically-related administration and project work.
4. To undertake production of questionnaires, data collection, setting up of databases and
spreadsheets, data analysis, and the production of reports and presentation of summaries
to colleagues using IT and statistical programmes, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,
Powerpoint) and SPSS.

IT responsibilities
1. To input and maintain, appropriate computer and manual clinical records and statistical
data and provide this to the Clinical Psychologist when necessary.
2. To engage in relevant computer and IT training as required.

3. To assist in the development, design and implementation of relevant IT projects.
4. To utilise computer software to develop or create documents, statistics and graphs for the purpose of presentations.

General
1. To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping, including electronic data entry and recording.
2. To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to both the specific patient group and mental health.
3. To ensure that all aspects of professional activity (e.g. communication with patients, relatives, colleagues as well as in the assessment, development/delivery of interventions) issues of diversity such as race, culture, identity, gender and sexuality are sensitively considered and incorporated to reflect individual differences appropriately.
4. To work flexibly and respond to service needs accordingly e.g. with regard to cover Service Level Agreement arrangements.
