National Highways have an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager to join our Business Transformation and Performance team, delivering a major transformation programme. Within this role, you will be contributing to the planning and delivery of projects, carrying out assigned project work to ensure the achievement of project objectives within agreed time, quality, and cost thresholds.
This role sits within the Business Transformation and Performance group, which comprises of a number of teams, the transformation arm of which is working on a programme of transformation looking to deliver C.£550 million of efficiencies over the next 5 year roads period.
You will be required to work closely with managers and stakeholders to discuss their projects and to understand their vision, timescales, and outcomes, communicating effectively across our Programme. Your ability to influence and challenge effectively will be essential.
This role is a full time, permanent position that can be based at any of our national offices (Bedford, Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Guildford, Leeds, Manchester) and travel will be required to other UK sites.
What you’ll be leading on
- Support the development of business cases, project plans and other supporting documentation for new projects to secure necessary approval and investment decisions, and to align stakeholders on project plans
- Carry out feasibility work for proposed projects, to inform the development of business cases and investment proposals.
- Plan and define project steps or schedules, consistent with defined review milestones and priorities, to contribute to the design of the overall project plan.
- Lead the production of the monthly progress report to the PMO and Programme Leader and be accountable for the accuracy of information flows into the business.
- Contribute to the commissioning and performance management of delivery partners and expert consultancy support, ensuring that project objectives and requirements are clearly understood, setting clear expectations for health and safety management, time and cost; and recommending appropriate remedial action where necessary.

- Experience supporting the development of complex projects or high profile projects
- Sound data management, audit and challenge skills to monitor supplier information flows
- Evidence of leadership on safety standards and behaviours within multiple team reporting structures within project delivery
