Job description
The University of Warwick seeks to appoint a full-time, permanent Assistant Professor in Film and Television Studies with effect from 1st September 2023. You will develop and teach undergraduate and/or postgraduate modules within the Department’s BA Film Studies, BA Film and Literature and MA Film and Television Studies programmes; cover duties convening one or more of the core modules (with the support of a mentor); supervise students’ work for assessment; develop excellent research that will contribute to our submission for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF); participate in wider tutoring, assessment and admissions processes within the Department; attend Department meetings; and contribute as a fully-integrated member of the team.
We are seeking an engaged scholar to contribute to the teaching, research, and academic culture of Film and Television Studies at Warwick. We are particularly keen to appoint early career applicants with one or more of the following research specialisms:
- Asian film and/or television
- African film and/or television
- Race and representation in film and/or television
- Black/diasporic film and/or programme making
- Indigenous media
The successful applicant will play an active role in sustaining and shaping our disciplines through leadership and participation in national and international subject associations and organisations and be keen to develop research grant applications. You will teach on our core undergraduate and postgraduate modules and develop your own research-informed specialist modules; you will offer dynamic teaching and modes of assessment that demonstrate your commitment to pedagogic innovation, anti-exclusion, curricula decolonisation, and developing the future of the discipline. You will participate in the administration of the degree and the unit, and help shape the atmosphere of the working environment. You will also be interested in becoming a leading voice in the School of Creative Arts, Performance and Visual Cultures and helping to establish new courses and research initiatives.

The panel will be comprised of Professor Helen Wheatley (Director of Film and Television Studies), Professor Stuart Hampton-Reeves (Head of School) and 4 others. The recruitment process will involve a short research presentation, and an interview. Interview questions will be circulated in advance and shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit a module outline for a specialist option and writing sample of a recent piece of academic writing.
Job Description
JOB PURPOSE:
To undertake research, teaching, and administration as part of the Film and Television Studies team as well as undertaking public engagement and regional collaboration with colleagues across the School of Creative Arts, Performance, and Visual Cultures.
To engage in research at a level commensurate with the reputation of the University, and to develop funding applications to support this research.
To play a key role in strategic planning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within Film and Television Studies and across the School.
To exercise academic citizenship at School, University, and Discipline level.
To help expand Film and Television Studies’ engagement with research across languages and cultures, and our commitment to anti-exclusion.
Emotional Effort
In student-facing activity, the post-holder will encounter other people’s emotional distress, frustration, and other psychological difficulty, particularly in the context of personal tutoring and other student support and teaching activities. The post-holder will need to be able to both offer support and hold clear professional boundaries. The post-holder will be offered a mentor with whom they can collaborate on any hurdles.
Mental Effort
This post will demand high levels of concentration, a significant amount of screen-work, and require an ability to manage complex dynamics in teaching environments. The role will involve strategic thinking around admissions and recruitment and a careful engagement with detail when it comes to dealing with student applications and other administrative tasks. The role will require an ability to manage multiple competing deadlines and pulls on your time and energy. The post-holder will participate in training, peer dialogue, and mentoring to help develop their skills and confidence in encountering these demands and what boundaries they need in place to ensure that the workplace is a humane and generative environment for them to work in.
Physical Effort
This role will involve in-person teaching and administration. The degree of physical exertion will depend on the nature of the teaching. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Principal Accountabilities
1. To deliver core modules, including lectures, seminars and workshops, and the supervision of dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and to develop new modules for the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
2. To use appropriate and innovative learning and assessment methods and materials and undertake the marking of assessed work in accordance with the University’s and the School’s defined criteria and processes, and provide effective and timely feedback to students.
3. To engage in research and writing and/or creative practice at a level commensurate with the reputation of the University.
4. To publish academic work at a level commensurate with the reputation of the University and be a key voice in REF submissions.
5. To maintain a broad knowledge of up-to-date research and scholarship in relevant fields to ensure that both research and teaching meets the standards expected within a research-led University.
6. To develop funding applications to support research, impact and public engagement activities.
7. To participate in public engagement, knowledge exchange, and regional collaboration, in partnership with colleagues in Film and Television Studies and the School.
8. To exercise academic citizenship and play a key role in strategic planning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Film and Television Studies and across the School.
9. To monitor the progress of students and to provide support and guidance in the role of personal tutor.
10. To undertake other specific activities as may be required, including attending relevant Exam Boards and School meetings, and participating in committees and working groups within the School, the Faculty and the University.
11. To engage in continuous professional development by reflecting on one's own practice as a teacher and researcher/creative practitioner.

The School of Creative Arts, Performance and Visual Cultures
The School of Creative Arts, Performance and Visual Cultures (SCAPVC) brings together Film and Television Studies, the Warwick Writing Programme, Theatre and Performance Studies, Cultural and Media Policy Studies, and History of Art. We are housed in a new, state-of-the-art Arts building, the FAB, which includes a cinema, screening rooms, a video editing suite, a media lab and two theatre studios along with rehearsal rooms.
