About You

Do you like communicating with a wide variety of people?

Can you carry out research of historic plans to see how they affect today’s world?

Do you have strong data and mapping skills?

If so, read on….

You will be familiar with both mining, especially coal mining, and mapping (GIS). Using a wide variety of sources of information you will ensure our coal mining database is as accurate as possible.

With an eye for detail, you will be comfortable using GIS software to visualise and interrogate data taken from plans sometimes hundreds of years old.

With an honest and open approach you will be comfortable relating information to a wide range of stakeholders – from home owners to consultants, engineers to solicitors.

About The Role

Our Mining Information and Planning Department provide data and mining information support and advice across the whole organisation, and externally. Fundamentally, we update and maintain our national coal mining database, perform data improvement activities and conduct research and investigation into a variety of related matters.

Beginning as part of our Core Team you will be assisting the Mining Consultant and Information Managers in reviewing and understanding mining data from many different sources including electronic site investigation reports, borehole data, historical interpreted plans and original coal mining abandonment plans held in our on-site National Archives standard plan store.

Working collaboratively across our whole organisation, in particular with our Customer Services Team, you will ensure that our data is as accurate as possible. This includes adding any new information we may receive and updating existing information using the latest techniques available.

As your training progresses and opportunities arise you will support the work of our Data Improvement and Research and Investigation team in their focussed studies.

You will be familiar with ESRI ArcGIS or related mapping software that fundamental to carrying out data updates, georeferencing, research, data interrogation and queries on a daily basis.
