This is an exciting role within the Science Department in UKHSA.
As assistant librarian, you will contribute to the delivery of UKHSA’s Knowledge and Library Services (KLS) in support of all UKHSA staff, with specific responsibility to contribute to the provision of library services at UKHSA Chilton. The Knowledge and Library Services team provide library and knowledge management expertise to support research and development, evidence-based practice, management and business services, with the overall aim of facilitating the translation of knowledge and evidence into practice.

Job description
As the Assistant Librarian your main responsibilities will include:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Support collection development and acquisitions, including responsibility for the selection and weeding of journals, monographs and reports, and developing other KLS content to ensure that UKHSA collections meet user requirements
- Undertake cataloguing, classification and data entry of new collections, evidence content, and signposting of external resources in the UKHSA Library Management System where appropriate, including responsibility for specific topics and resource types.
- Daily management of physical stock, and integration of new and transferred stock into the UKHSA collections, including leading on implementing marketing and promotion to specific user groups. This will include planning and delivering exhibitions, marketing materials, and other selected dissemination of information activities.
- Provide data entry and day-to-day management of the UKHSA institutional repository, including categorization of publication types, open access management, and data quality monitoring.
- Support the process of procurement of appropriate journal subscriptions and online access for nominated user groups or subject specialisms, ensuring access to appropriate electronic resources, liaising with service providers when necessary, including the Systems Librarian or IT for internal issues.
- Help deliver KLS enquiry services to all UKHSA users through the enquiry management system, telephone, e-mail and in person, to help facilitate access to the best available evidence. This will involve making decisions about where to triage responses and how to record service data.
- Provide support for the Knowledge and Evidence Service team in the provision of KLS current awareness, horizon scanning and update services.
- Undertake literature searching using a wide range of public health information resources.
- Ensure that UKHSA Knowledge and Library Services work effectively across the distributed team, and collaborate effectively with external information providers and national agencies, partners, and networks.
- Contribute to, and implement, KLS marketing and publicity strategies and activities, including responsibility for assigned KLS intranet pages, and the provision of locally tailored products and services where required.

We are looking for an exceptional Assistant Librarian
It is important through your CV and Statement of Suitability of 1000 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:
Essential
- Experience in a research, academic or NHS library or information service
- Knowledge of a wide range of health care resources, including experience in document delivery processes and systems, costs and budgetary management
- Experience of using library management systems, including a range of specific activity-based modules
- Understanding of copyright and other legislation relating to libraries
- Experience of working with a wide range of library users, at all levels
- Skills in information retrieval from relevant sources including bibliographical databases, the internet, e-resources from a variety of platforms
- An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships.
- Able to travel to other UKHSA sites
- User focused approach to service delivery
Desirable
- Able to deliver user education in using information and evidence resources, including teaching and presentation skills

Selection process details
This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours/Strengths/ Experience
This part of the selection process should outline how you consider your skills, experience and achievements, and provide evidence of your suitability for the role, with particular reference to the essential criteria outlined.
You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history. This will be used in sifting process and will be scored.
Stage 1: Application & Sift
As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide a Statement of Suitability in no more than 1000 words, AND/OR provide evidence of Behaviours through Success Profiles (a maximum word count of 100 words per Behaviour), providing examples of how you meet the essential criteria. It should also detail what you and your experience can bring to the role. We suggest using the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method to demonstrate real-life examples for the specified essential criteria. Please note, only information provided within the stated word count will be considered.
If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to interview.
Stage 2: Panel Interview
All candidates who are successful at the sift stage will undertake an in-person interview blended against a mixture of Behaviours and Strength elements of Success Profiles
Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).
