We would aim to teach you a wide range of different survey skills to help you develop your full career potential. SLR provides an outstanding opportunity to learn and develop your ecological skills whilst working for a large and well-respected consultancy practice. These roles would be suitable for individuals seeking their first professional role or those who have practical survey or consultancy experience post-graduation.
SLR has one of the most experienced ecology teams in the UK; ten of our senior staff each have more than twenty years’ professional consultancy expertise. Starting your career with SLR therefore offers a unique opportunity to work alongside this experienced team and to integrate with professionals from SLR’s other disciplines, including hydrology, air quality, landscape, planning, environmental impact assessment and sustainability consultants.
SLR is a truly multi-disciplinary specialist environmental consultancy, our teams are well-integrated and provide a joined-up service for a wide range of national and local clients. SLR has a “one team” approach to business, meaning that you would have the opportunity to work throughout the UK, with the full complement of SLR professionals to assist you.
The role
The role will involve assisting with field surveys and protected species mitigation projects, depending on your level of existing experience, as and when necessary. The role will involve working within South and Central England and may include early morning, evening and night-time working. Therefore, a willingness to travel and stay overnight is important although we may be able to offer work locally to you. Expenses are paid for travel and accommodation. We are particularly keen to recruit those that wish to work weekends only, or a mixture of weekend and weekdays. Weekday only positions are also available. The appointment is on a casual basis with work offered based on your availability and the needs of the project. It is likely to be in blocks of 3, 4 or 5 days. There is potential to move into a permanent role at the end of the season.

About you
Whatever your existing skill-set, you will be dedicated to a career as a professional ecologist and show a commitment to continuing professional development. The successful candidate would be joining a highly successful, international multidisciplinary consultancy with an established and well-respected ecological presence in the UK.
- A passion for ecology and understanding of the importance of maintaining high professional standards of work in the sector
- BSc Ecology, Biological Science or equivalent (MSc desirable), and eligible for Student or Qualifying level CIEEM membership
- Able to handle animals safely and with care.
- Able to identify common species including amphibians and reptiles.
- A CSCS card is essential. SLR may be able to assist if you do not have one already.
- Any experience acting as construction works supervising ecologist (ECoW) or delivering ecological mitigation contracts would be useful
- Valid UK driving licence and access to a car is essential
