Purpose of the role
An Assistant Director of Education Improvement role is being created to support the Corporate Director of Children’s Services and the Director of Education to put in place the necessary systems and processes that will lead to improvement.
This core purpose of the role will be to:
· Lead on the further development and implementation of the Education Improvement Plan so that it is embedded in the directorate and underpinned by effective operational procedures.
· Lead on the coordination and delivery of the Education Improvement Board and the priority areas that report into it, accelerating progress and delivery and providing assurance to the DCS that improvement is underway at pace.
· Working to support the Heads of Service and Director of Education in progressing the core activities relating to the Education Improvement Board.
· Leading improvement activity underway in Alternative Provision and SEND to address key areas of under-performance.
· Review decision making and governance arrangements in the directorate.
· Develop and implement robust and transparent governance and compliance controls, to manage and minimise risk.
· Ensure that risk management and reporting arrangements are in place, in line with the corporate framework, and lead to effective risk management, escalation and oversight
· Oversee preparations for the SEND Local Area Inspection with partners, such as Health, to ensure these are sufficiently robust, including the development of the SEF.
· Support the Director of Education to build a culture of high performance and accountability.
Experience
The appointment will need to be someone that has:
· Operated at a senior level in a local authority education directorate either as a Director of Education or Assistant Director of Education / SEND and/or Inclusion in a comparable LA with evidence of achieving improved and successful outcomes for children.
· A clear understanding of the strategic landscape for education provision and the opportunities and challenges for the Local Authority.
· Experience of strategy and policy development and of managing operations at a senior level.
· Experience of playing a role in managing large scale organisational and culture change, gaining employee engagement and commitment and achieving the desired results.
· Working effectively in a complex and changing environment, providing clear objective advice, to gain outcomes that achieve the requirements of corporate and service aims.
