Position: Camp Assistant Director, Camping and Outdoor Education (Neighbourhood Day Camps)
Location: Various Locations (Ottawa, Nepean, Kanata, Orleans, Clarence-Rockland)
Type: Casual, part-time contract, hourly rate of $17.07

What you offer?

Reporting to the Neighbourhood Day Camp Coordinator, the NDC summer Assistant Camp Director supervises and implements the delivery of quality recreational programs, services, and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled in Neighbourhood Day Camp programs. The Assistant Camp Director supervises counsellors and program staff and provides them with tools to create a meaningful camp experience for all participants as they engage in summer camp activities, discover nature and enjoy the natural environment, build self-confidence and establish lasting friendships.

  • Clarence-Rockland

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Responsible for supervising and implementing the delivery of quality programs, services, and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled in camp.
  • Manage any concerns related to customer service and helps follow up on concerns that arise.
  • Supervise Camp Section Heads, Camp Counsellors, and Camp Program Staff.
  • Responsible for supporting the training of staff and providing them with tools to be successful in their role.
  • Must role model and enforce all YMCA and Camp-specific rules and policies.
  • Responsible for supporting the leadership team with the daily administrative requirements of the day campsite. These onsite administrative duties include report printing, attendance, camper phone calls, etc.
  • Required to be the designated onsite supervisor in the absence of the Camping Coordinator in an emergency.
  • Staff will be required to swim or be in pools with the participants.

What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent in a related field
  • A Bachelor of Education would be considered an asset.
  • An undergraduate degree in business, recreation, human kinetics, or social services would be considered an asset.

Language

  • Fluent in English, oral and written
  • Bilingualism is an asset

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in a day or residential camp in positions with progressive leadership and responsibility
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience working in and around camping and outdoor education and a minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in and around camping and outdoor education
  • Sound knowledge of child development
  • National Lifeguard Certification, Bronze Cross, Paddle Canada, or other relevant certifications are strongly considered assets for this position
  • CUI Level 1 or Level 2 or previous high ropes experience/hours is considered an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR “C” certification
  • Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, members, staff, and volunteers
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity

Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector, not more than 6 months old is required. This requirement requires a renewal every three (3) years.
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons and submit the certificate of completion.
