Position: Seasonal Overnight Assistant Director (Camp Otonabee)
Location: 1620 Sixth Line Rd RR #1, Dunrobin, ON
Type: Casual, part-time contract, preferred start date May 1, 2023. Half-day rate of $75.00 and full-day rate of $150.00.
Preferred start date: Monday, May 01, 2023
Closing date: Friday, Jun 23, 2023

The YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region’s Bonnenfant YMCA-YWCA Outdoor Education and Leadership Centre is a year-round Outdoor Education and Summer Camp facility that serves more than 10,000 participants each year. The BYOC provides an opportunity for children, youth, and adults to engage in outdoor activities, enjoy the natural environment, build self-confidence, and establish lasting friendships. The BYOC is focused on providing exceptional leadership training and outdoor education and adventure experiences that will promote healthy lifestyles and encourage positive relationships with the natural world.

The Overnight Assistant Director of Outdoor Education and Camping is responsible for assisting with the overall portfolio of the camping branch, including supporting the Bonnenfant Y Outdoor Centre and Camp Otonabee.

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Assist in the coordination of camp logistics
  • Coaching, motivating, and mentoring the seasonal camp team
  • Frequent collaboration during planning sessions and implementing change throughout the department
  • Responsible for making independent decisions that reflect the practices and policies of the YMCA-YWCA regarding managing the safety of all campers and staff
  • Must use sound judgment in dealing with sensitive, confidential matters that apply to employees and participants.
  • Assist with incorporating the principles of YMCA Healthy Child Development into all programming

What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in business/recreation/human kinetics/social services would be an asset
  • Bachelor of Education would be an asset
  • A Degree that demonstrates high-level communication skills

Language

  • Fluent in English, oral and written
  • Bilingualism an asset

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrate diplomacy when managing staff
  • Strong and effective listening skills
  • Strong conflict resolution skills
  • Effective presentation skills for staff training sessions, and parent information nights, among others
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of related experience; working in an outdoor education and camping environment is an asset
  • 2 years of supervisory experience showing a progressive understanding of the YMCA-YWCA and the ability to establish and manage strong relationships with staff and participants.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification
  • Sound knowledge of child development
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to manage difficult situations or phone calls, provide counselling to team or peers
  • Ability to provide advice to others on how to solve a problem
  • Certification(s) in challenge course Facilitation, National Lifeguard Service, Wilderness First Aid, Paddle Canada, and membership in related associations will all be considered assets

Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • Flexible to work days, evenings, and weekends
  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector, not more than 6 months old is required
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons and submit the certificate of completion.

  • Risk Management: Ability to apply knowledge and skills to identify potential risks in advance, analyze them and take precautionary steps to reduce/curb the risk.
