Job introduction

We’re looking for a senior manager with the vision and corporate leadership skills to set, shape and realise the strategic direction of this diverse portfolio. You'll have a specific placemaking role for the city, using culture and Brighton & Hove’s unique history to create a sense of shared identity, and to position the city as a distinctive visitor destination, capitalising on its assets and the potential to increase people’s health, happiness and wellbeing.

About the role

As Assistant Director you’ll report to the Executive Director – Economy, Environment and Culture and have a wide-ranging remit, including:

  • managing the Council's strategic relationships with the i360, Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust and other key partners, as prominent visitor attractions in the city;
  • embedding culture at the heart of the city’s regeneration, economic growth and well-being ambitions;
  • driving the strategic delivery of the city's Tourism Strategy, to strengthen the visitor economy;
  • leading the delivery of a new 10-year investment plan for our sports and leisure facilities;

While it’s essential that you have a passion for arts, tourism and leisure, it’s also important that you present a highly developed appreciation of how these areas fit within the wider place agenda and can support the economic growth of the city. We’re looking for a versatile leader with a breadth of perspective and experience, including a track record of delivering major projects and securing significant external funding.

Experience or knowledge of a range of different delivery and governance models around service provision will be of real value. We’re working ever more closely with our community and creating new partnership arrangements that harness different sources of expertise to enable growth in creative industries and ensure a place for Brighton & Hove on the international stage.

You should bring a sound understanding of investment planning, to protect and develop our cultural assets, and practical experience of contract management is essential. The ability to work well with a diverse range of stakeholders is key: you’ll need to be able to influence, advocate and broker agreement on an agenda that people are passionate about.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.

We offer the opportunity for the suitable candidate to choose to work in a hybrid way. Your specific working arrangements will be subject to team and service working arrangements already in place alongside Government guidance. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team and travel to and from your contractual location would be at your own expense.
