Summary of Job Duties:
The Assistant Director of Benefits and Retirement Planning plays a vital role in overseeing and managing the University of Arkansas benefits programs, wellness initiatives, and retirement planning strategies. This position requires a strong understanding of employee benefits, wellness programs, and retirement planning options to develop and implement comprehensive strategies that support the well-being and financial security of our employees. This position is responsible for directing and planning the day-to-day operations in administering the University’s group benefits and leave programs, performing accounting and reporting requirements to meet stated deadlines, auditing, and other duties to ensure prompt and accurate compliance with Federal and State Laws and University of Arkansas policies and procedures. This position provides day-to-day advice, training, and support to HR staff and the University community, as appropriate, on benefits and leave issues involving the interpretation and application of policies, guidelines, and procedures. The Assistant Director of Benefits provides direct supervision to benefits and leave staff.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • At least five years of demonstrated experience as a human resource professional with at least two years of experience in benefits administration
  • At least two years of supervisory experience
Applicable equivalencies may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Leave Management Specialist (CLMS) or Professional in Human Resources (PHR/SPHR) a plus
  • Proficient in Workday
  • Demonstrated experience in vendor management and negotiation
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Experience in higher education

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs):
  • In-depth knowledge of employee benefits laws, leave regulations, and industry best practices
  • Knowledge of common office software applications
  • Knowledge of employee benefit programs and eligibility requirements
  • Strong analytical skills to assess data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively communicate complex information to diverse audiences
  • Good organization and time management skills
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to interpret and apply the provisions of laws, regulations, and policies to specific situations
  • Ability to collaborate with customers and utilize critical thinking skills
  • Ability to understand and implement technical and business-related documents and concepts

Additional Information:

Salary Information:
$70,000 - $80,000 (commensurate with education and experience)
