Job description
Year In Industry Data Scientists
We are Malvern Panalytical. We’re big on small.
We are here to unleash the power of very small things to make big things happen. Our technologies enable our customers to create a better world. Improving everything from the energies that power us and the materials we build with, to the medicines that cure us and the foods we enjoy. We partner with many of the world’s biggest companies, universities and research organizations. They value us not only for the power of our solutions, but also for the depth of our expertise, collaboration and integrity. We are a globally diverse mix of visionary thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and detail-loving geeks, united by knowing that when you can make the invisible visible, you make the impossible possible.
What’s the assignment?
We are looking for the next generation of Data Scientists to join us for a year in industry. The three placements are for undergraduates who will work within our Data Science team, based in Bristol.
Our data science team is part of our Research and Development department, which consists of over two hundred Scientists and Engineers covering all STEM disciplines. Our mission is to maximise the impact, and utility and quality of analytical instrumentation in natural, physical and material sciences by the incorporation of machine intelligence. The work sits at the interface of the sciences, computing and data science.
Where you’ll work:
You’ll be based at our Bristol Digital Hub in the heart of Bristol, Redcliffe – (a 5-minute walk from Temple Meads station) with an inclusive, friendly and social team.
Is this placement for me?
These placements will be suitable for anyone studying any STEM discipline (any natural or physical science, maths, computing) with strong interests across the sciences. You should have some programming experience and a passion for creative problem solving. You should enjoy working across the boundaries of disciplines and enjoy learning beyond your own discipline.
Some of the things you’ll be doing:
You will work on a specific project. All available projects will expose you to cutting-edge statistical techniques, machine learning and cloud computing. You will apply your knowledge and develop your skills to deliver creative and innovative solutions.
We use Python and the usual scientific and machine learning libraries (such as numpy, pandas, sklearn and pytorch). Don’t worry if you don’t have experience with these specific tools, a desire to learn will cover any missing skills.
The three projects available at the Bristol site are the following:
Performant and extensible light scattering and particle motion simulation for instrument design.
Develop a cloud-native simulation platform that can simulate the types of signal observed by various instruments we develop. This is to be used to guide instrument design and generate training data for machine learning solutions. It is at the interface of physical and computer science.
Extending the capability of microcalorimetry to study biomolecular interactions.
Develop novel methods for the extraction of greater insight from calorimetric data, exploiting cloud-native design, for the characterisation of interactions between biological macromolecules. This project is at the interface of natural and computer science.
Developing workflows to use complex rendered synthetic images for training machine learning algorithms
Develop workflows using the latest in rendering technologies and image style transfer technologies, e.g. CylceGANs, and other forms of synthetic data generation, to produce fit-for-purpose labelled synthetic data. These will be used for the training of machine learning algorithms including deep neural networks, for a range of applications across the Malvern Panalytical domain portfolio.
You will be considered for all the placement roles above but if you have a strong interest in any of the projects or particular areas, please let us know through the application and interview process.
What you need to know:
- This is a full-time position with a working pattern of 37.5 hours, Monday to Friday. Although we also have options to flex this.
- You will need to be available and ready to start with us on 3rd July 2023 and be able to commit to stay with us until 26th July 2024.
- You will receive lots of benefits from being part of our team but of course you will need some time away, so we provide you with 25 days paid holiday per annum + UK bank holidays
- You will be paid an annual salary of £18,525.
As part of your role, we also ask the year in industry placement students to be STEM Ambassadors for the company, lead on STEM activities and represent Malvern Panalytical at STEM events throughout the year.
You must be able to provide relevant documentation to demonstrate your right to work in the UK and/or hold the appropriate Work / Student Visa to allow work placements. We are unable to sponsor Visa applications for the year in industry roles.
We are proud to be globally diverse and inclusive. We’re all different – though together, we share common values that guide us every day.
