Job description
Build a career in the book industry at a growing, supportive company that is committed to giving children access to high-quality books. Peters is the leading supplier of children’s books to schools and libraries in the UK, and the central Birmingham location offers a rare opportunity to progress in the industry outside of London.
A wonderland of newly-published, diverse and inclusive books, our bookshop holds over 30,000 titles and is regularly visited by schools, publishers and authors. Getting the right books to the right children is an important responsibility, which is why we’re looking for someone with a genuine interest in books to head up our bookshop.
With potential to take on a key leadership role within the business, the Assistant Bookshop Manager will work alongside our Commercial Director and Operations Manager to develop the processes around our books supply and order fulfilment.
This is varied role that will include:
- Line management of a small and dedicated team
- Project management of non-standard book orders
- Suggesting ideas to improve efficiency and revenue
- Quality control
- Organising returns to publishers
- Ensuring customers have a positive experience
Peters is a small independent business with a strong record of internal promotion. There will be opportunities to collaborate with various departments – including Marketing, Sales, Customer Services and Website Development.

Additional skills that would be advantageous include:
- An organised approach with an interest in process improvement
- Good IT skills, especially Excel
- Previous management or supervisory experience
As well as opportunities for career progression, we offer staff discounts, volunteering days and discounted parking, plus 27 days’ holiday (rising to 32).
