About us

Archaeology South-East is part of UCL – a global multidisciplinary university with a diverse community and progressive approach to teaching and research. As part of the UCL Institute of Archaeology, research and learning are at our core - and we want you to work with us to continue delivering on this mission. We take pride in delivering high quality project outcomes for our clients, working hard to maximise research and public benefit from development-led fieldwork. We work for a range of people supporting development and infrastructure projects as well as heritage management. Our large team provides a comprehensive range of services and areas of specialist expertise so there are plenty of people to learn from as your career in archaeology progresses. If you’re new to commercial archaeology, working at Archaeology South-East will provide you with the training needed and opportunities to develop your skills and experience within a supportive team environment.

About the role

We require additional field archaeologists to excavate and record archaeological features and deposits and collect artefacts and samples. We have projects running from our offices near Brighton, East Sussex and in Witham, Essex. There are opportunities for immediate starts with minimum initial contract length of three months and with excellent prospects of contract extensions as work progresses. Whilst we have local work coming up, staff are sometimes required to undertake stay away work.

About you

You are likely to have a degree in Archaeology (or a related discipline) and some fieldwork experience – that may include some time working on development-led projects, but if not, we will provide all the training you need. We are particularly keen on recruiting staff based close to either of our Sussex or Essex offices and preference will be given to those based locally to these locations. Holding a driving license and being willing to drive for work is also highly desirable as is holding a CSCS card, although we will arrange and fund this if required.

We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce.
