Looking for a fun, fulfilling seasonal job? Georgetown C&O Canal Boat Tours are hiring Part & Full Time Actors as Teaching Artists on our new Canal Boat!
Position Description
Using dramatic & comedic techniques, Teaching Artist Tour Guides will learn and perform a scripted program on the new Georgetown Canal Boat, connecting an audience of local, national, and international visitors with the history of the C&O Canal. This position will deliver the program in historic costume for ticketed boat tours, student field trips, and special engagements. Tour Guides will also staff the check-in area, directing visitors and assisting them with ticket purchases and scheduling issues. This position is anticipated to be seasonal (32-40 hours/ weekend work required) from Late July- October while the boat program is operational. Teaching Artists report to the Director of Education and Partnerships, or alternatively to the Education Specialist.
Responsibilities
- Learn and Rehearse the Canal Boat program, and Canal Boat operations
- Deliver high quality performance in period costume on Canal Boat rides, and at the Georgetown C&O Canal site, according to the direction of the Director of Education
- Perform Canal Boat operations as needed during Boat Rides (lock gate operation, emergency assistance, etc…)
- Staffing ticketing area to assist visitors via phone, online, or in-person with ticketing and information.
- Housekeeping duties, including costume laundry, maintenance, and general tidiness
Qualifications
- Must consent to and pass a criminal background check
- Must have experience, training or interest in the Dramatic Arts, Educational Interpretation, or giving Tours.
- Must have basic experience with handling a computer/ device.
- Must be reliable & punctual, able to commit to part-time work (8 hrs. per day, Wednesday-Sunday: weekends are required), and dedicated to excellent customer service.
- Must possess physical capabilities of conducting the boat tour and emergency protocols: be physically capable of being outdoors for most of the day, walking, lifting (45 pounds), riding a moving Boat, swimming, being in close proximity to live farm animals or wildlife. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.
