Job summary
The Mission Ready Training Centre (MRTC) is part of the Army Collective Training Group and is responsible for assuring the directed training of both individual soldiers and formed units deploying on Operations within the UK and worldwide. After being closed for several years, Bassingbourn Barracks is undergoing a complete modernisation to accommodate MRTC and numerous smaller lodger units. The MRTC is a mix of Army personnel (both Regular and Reserve) and Civil Servants.
The civilian vehicle mechanics will form part of the LAD team, offering continuity to the department and assisting in delivering maximum vehicle fleet availability in order for MRTC to complete its mission, through the facilitation of military training.
This vacancy is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description

The Civilian Vehicle Mechanics will form part of the Motor Transport (MT) team, offering continuity to the department and assisting the MT Senior Non-commissioned Officer (SNCO) in delivering maximum vehicle fleet availability through good engineering and administrative processes.
These posts will require a degree of physical ability as you will be expected to lift and carry spares/tools and work on parts of vehicles that may have restricted access/space. In accordance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance, the recommended maximum manual handling weight that applicants can expect to lift is men (25kg) and women (16kg).
These posts have a regular opportunity to work overtime and will involve on occasions working outside of the core hours, so a degree of flexibility is required. (This may require the need to work on evenings, weekends, Bank Holidays or outside Core hours. Overtime pay or time off in lieu will be granted).
Person specification
1. Perform Level 1 and 2 repairs and servicing on Protective Mobility equipment and traditional Core equipment. Perform inspection, repair, modification and demand materials / spares. Update JAMES. Perform in-depth fault diagnosis on complex equipment and deliver repair procedures accordingly.
2. Follow approved production processes and standards for each task (e.g. AESP) and use correct tooling / machinery. Ensure teams have correct tools (with in-date calibration evidence) and plant / machinery available to deliver the plan.
3. Able to work independently whilst remaining safety compliant. Provide Management cover for other Supervisors as required.
4. Share experience and knowledge with colleagues. Shadow others as required in order to learn or gain competence. Attend training courses as required.
5. Competent PC use (MS Office, MS Outlook, SharePoint, JAMES). Attend equipment specific automotive courses. Complete Mandatory online training. Use ST&E and diagnostic equipment.
6. Deliver Organisation Communication on daily, weekly briefs and reporting incidents. Also support Senior Managers with the briefing of technical issues to the Chain of Command.
7. Work collaboratively with supporting teams to deliver shared production output.
8. Communicate at all levels with Commercial Contractors, Supply Chain and equipment users. Close liaison with Contractors involving in-depth consultation over automotive issues.
9. Work as part of the management team with input to planning and output required. Monitor production against plan. Conduct daily and weekly monitoring of forecast maintenance. Highlight risks to achieving planned output.
10. Use problem solving, analytical skills and judgement to respond to issues arising with equipment. Able to present an analysis of the problems supported by evidence, with courses of action and a recommendation.
11. Deploy on recovery callouts as required.
12. Conduct and/or assist with monthly SHEF and ES management checks.
