Job Role: Architectural Assistant / Development Assistant

Starting salary: £26k - £28k per year
Fairstone Property is a small, residential development company which has recently relocated from East London to Brighton & Hove. The company specialises in new builds (up to 9 units), refurbishments and long-term rental investments. The current workforce consists of me (Jethro East, Founder and Director) but following a successful couple of years I’ve decided it’s time to start expanding the business.
The primary, architectural assistant role will involve:
- Producing planning drawings
- Instructing and liaising with surveyors and consultants
- Submitting and managing planning applications
- Discharging planning conditions
- Producing detailed, technical construction drawings
Applicants must have real world experience with all of the above and also have a good general understanding of current UK building regulations.
The secondary, development assistant role will involve:
- Finding and appraising sites or existing properties with development potential
- Pre-construction admin e.g. organising utility connections / party wall agreements / rights of light / CDM / structural warranty / CIL / S106 / SNN etc
- Finding contractors and managing tenders
- Project managing construction
- Staging and marketing finished units
- Progressing sales and/or tenant applications
Applicants are not required to have experience with any of the above although any experience is a bonus.
Computer skills (essential and non-essential):
- AutoCAD (essential - must be proficient)
- Graphic design (essential - must be able to produce high quality planning documents / brochures etc)
- Revit / Sketchup (non-essential but would be a bonus)
- 3D renders / illustrations (non-essential but would be a bonus)

I am fully self-taught and happy to pass on all the skills and knowledge I have acquired.
I have recently started placing significantly more importance on the sustainability of the projects I work on. I believe that, using a combination of good design, careful detailing, more vigilant construction management and the intelligent incorporation of new technology, it’s possible to build new (or retrofit existing) properties which are significantly more energy efficient and sustainable than required by regulation, without jeopardising the project’s commercial viability. I am keen to find someone who shares these values and can help with this mission.
My ideal applicant would be a proficient and proactive architectural assistant who is excited by the idea of a more varied, hands-on and autonomous role within property development.
