Job description
We are recruiting an Apprentice Trading Standards Practitioner to join our professional, dynamic and successful Trading Standards service.
This team carries out a range of Trading Standard functions including product safety, misleading descriptions, food standards, illicit tobacco, counterfeit products, and weights and measures.
This is an entry level role where you’ll work towards qualifying as a Trading Standards Practitioner following a recognised apprenticeship scheme. You’ll develop a variety of skills and knowledge including skills in investigative and enforcement work.
This is an apprenticeship framework/standard - Level 6 Trading Standards Practitioner. On satisfactory completion, the apprentice will move into a Trading Standards Practitioner post with a salary range of £38,296 - £42,503 (subject to any cost-of-living increases).
A DBS check will be required for this role.

The successful candidate will need to be available to join us by early September 2023 which is when the course starts.
Role ResponsibilitiesThe role will develop and teach you how to:
- Undertake inspection work, audits, investigations and other enforcement or administrative activities relevant to the City’s Trading Standards programme.
- Produce reports ensuring appropriate decisions have been made and that all policies, procedures and legal requirements are met including all human rights issues. Give evidence as necessary in criminal and civil proceedings.
- Work with businesses to help them comply with relevant legislation. Provide information, guidance, and advice to business on how to comply with legislation.
- Support investigations including the seizing of evidence and making contemporaneous records for evidential use and report writing. Undertake test purchasing, take samples, and assist with the examination and testing of goods and services as required.
- Alongside studying for the apprenticeship, attend relevant training courses to develop knowledge and expertise.
- Work with other enforcement agencies, partner agencies such as Trading Standards Southeast and National Trading Standards, as well as colleagues within MKCC as required
- Willingness to learn and apply new knowledge and skills to everyday tasks.
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent with Maths and English Grade C or above.
- Comfortable in the use of Microsoft Office and IT equipment.
- You’ll be an exceptional team player who with initial guidance and support will be able to progressively work autonomously and to prioritise workloads against targets and meet deadlines.
- With training and guidance be able to produce reports and other written and verbal communications successfully.
- Under direction, officers will be expected progressively to enforce and advise on a range of legislation appropriate to their training and expertise.
- You’ll be highly motivated with excellent interpersonal skills to enable you to deal professionally with the public and businesses, responding to a wide range of people and situations requiring the good use of interpersonal and negotiating skills to achieve objectives.
- Full UK Driving Licence and use of own vehicle to visit varied sites and the ability to work in evenings and early mornings as and when required
