Apprentice Software Developer - Level 6 Manchester, England

Auto Trader
Full Time Manchester, England 21500 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

About the role

Our Software Developer apprentices are supported right from their first day. Their Technical Mentor, Line Manager and our dedicated Early Careers team are always there for them. And our collaborative, people-first culture means that help and support come naturally. It brings out the very best in them. It'll bring out the best in you when you join us as an Apprentice Software Developer.

Our Software Developers help us solve some of the most complex challenges facing the digital automotive industry. With over 40 years of experience and an average of 50 million cross-platform visits every month. Improving our consumer's and retailers' experience remains our core focus, and we're paving the way for consumers to buy vehicles online.

As an Apprentice Software Developer, you will complete a degree in BSc Digital & Technology Solutions (Level 6 Specialist Apprenticeship). Throughout the programme, you will spend at least 20% of your time learning through a blend of remote and face-to-face training and the rest of your time developing your skills in one of our engineering teams. From both on-the-job and classroom learning alongside coaching and mentoring, you will develop an excellent working knowledge of languages such as Java, TypeScript or Kotlin.

We work in a fast-paced, agile environment, which means collaboration is vital. Our teams focus on a different customer group, product, or service, which determines the technologies used in the team. Our squads are typically comprised of Technical, Product and Delivery Leads, UX Designers, UX Researchers, Test and Data Analysts and Developers.

Our software developers take an object-orientated approach to programming and use techniques such as TDD, refactoring, and debugging to deliver seamless user experiences. Our full-stack, cross-functional teams of developers, designers, product owners, and test engineers come together to enrich and extend our market-leading digital product range.

Our tech community value collaboration and teamwork. Interactions such as pair programming, code reviews and regular stand-ups mean that our software developers stay connected.

Our apprentices will be joining us in September 2023.

What we're looking for

  • You currently hold a Level 2/GCSE in English and Maths at grade 4 (C) or above or will be willing to study these whilst completing your apprenticeship (subject to an entry test)
  • You have a minimum of 112 UCAS points. This could be gained from A-Levels or other higher education qualifications. You can calculate your UCAS point here - https://www.ucas.com/ucas/tariff-calculator
  • You must not hold a qualification at an equivalent or higher to Level 6 in a similar subject.
  • You'll have some programming experience through education or coding in your spare time.
  • You have a passion and interest in technology, coding, and IT, love learning about the latest tech and want to embark on a career as a software developer.
  • You have good analytical skills, a logical approach and like solving problems. This might mean you like puzzles, strategy games, or just taking something apart and putting it back together again.
  • You enjoy working with others and are a good communicator.

The Degree Apprenticeship lasts up to four years and requires dedication, a love of learning and a genuine aim to succeed.

Benefits and more;

We offer a salary starting from £21,500 and a flexible benefits package to support your health and well-being. You'll have 28 days of holiday per year, in addition to bank holidays and half-day closures on Christmas and New Year's Eve. Our Aviva pension scheme offers between 5% to 7% employer contributions depending on the percentage you choose to contribute, and we provide Bupa healthcare cover for all our employees. Our employee assistance programme, car salary sacrifice scheme, Calm subscription and share-save options are just some other benefits on offer should you join us.

We're passionate about career development at Auto Trader, and we all develop and learn things differently. Whether you attend an external conference, utilise a LinkedIn Learning license or choose one of our in-house masterclasses, there's something for everyone.

Our hybrid working model gives you various options, including combining office with home working and flexible start and finish times.
