How you'll make a difference
If you’d like to gain a degree, without the debt, we are looking for a Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprentice to undertake this amazing opportunity to develop into a professional career.
You will be joining a 3 year Public Health Practitioner Degree apprenticeship training programme that includes work-based and academic learning. You will be completing on the job training with us and study with the University of West of England (UWE) to become a Public Health Practitioner.
Public Health Practitioners work to help people and communities to maximise their potential for a healthy, happy and productive life and to live healthier for longer. As our apprentice, you will work to contribute to population health and wellbeing. You will contribute to the assessment of population health needs and support the planning, delivery and evaluation of public health initiatives required to meet these population needs.
On successful completion of your programme, you will gain a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Public Health (Hons) and will be eligible to apply and register on the UK Public Health Register as a Public Health Practitioner UK Public Health Register (UKPHR).
At the end of the programme, you will have developed the relevant skills and knowledge to:
- contribute to the assessment of population health needs and to contribute to the planning or commissioning of services to meet those needs.
- audit and evaluate programmes/projects and contribute to the redesign of services and interventions to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
- review the evidence base for the most effective practice and the delivery of value for money in public health.
- promote ethical practice and demonstrate an understanding of the ethical dilemmas faced when promoting population health & reducing health inequalities.
- contribute to the review and design of policies and strategies to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
The programme runs from September to August and supports the apprentice to demonstrate learning against the integrated degree apprenticeship standard on a rolling 4-week cycle. The programme is structured with regular periods of non-teaching to support applied practice and building a portfolio of evidence, as well as periods for annual leave.

You will be supported throughout your programme by UWE with a designated assessor and we will allocate you a workplace mentor and Line Manager to give you guidance and support throughout your Level 6 apprenticeship.

The salary for this apprenticeship is Hay Grade 9: £25,409.00 - £27,852.00.
You will be based at Badminton Road, Yate.
The Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship at UWE is delivered exclusively online. You will attend learning via UWE’s virtual learning platform and be required to engage for at least six hours a week to attend the learning and teaching sessions. When you are not studying with UWE, you will be working alongside a variety of programme areas in the local authority communities and public health division.
As an apprentice, you will have access to all UWE Bristol facilities including academic programme staff support, 24-hour library support and student services.
You will be completing a Level 6 Public Health Practitioner Degree apprenticeship standard which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours, which you gain by working for us.
This apprenticeship requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine!
The end point assessment must be passed to fully complete the apprenticeship. You will receive plenty of support and encouragement to ensure you are prepared and confident to complete this stage.
Please note that you will be expected to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process and all candidates that successfully reach the interview stage will be required to provide a 10 minute presentation as part of the interview process. Candidates who do not provide a presentation at interview will not proceed through the recruitment process.

What we need from you
As an apprentice, we require you to engage fully in the apprenticeship programme, ensuring that every effort is made to attend all taught and remote sessions, scheduled assessor visits and that work is submitted in line with target dates set. You will have the support of a workplace mentor and university assessor to support you throughout the apprenticeship programme.

Please note candidates will need to meet the eligibility criteria for starting the apprenticeship.
To be eligible for this apprenticeship programme:
- You will need to hold a minimum qualification of 3 GCSEs at Grade 4 / C (or equivalent) including English and Maths
- You will hold a qualification at Level 3.
- You must not already hold a Degree or Masters qualification.
- You must not have or be in the process of completing a professional registration such as UKPHR Practitioner or Nutrition etc.
- You must have good literacy skills to be able to contribute to writing clear, accurate and concise reports.
- You will have effective IT and numeracy skills including the ability to accurately update information systems and databases.
- You will have excellent project and time management skills and the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines including statutory timeframes.
- You will have the ability to collate information from a variety of sources and present findings.
Apprentices should have the Right to Work in England and meet eligible residency status – this applies to citizens both within and outside the European Economic Area
