Located in our Machine Shop at our Montrose headquarters, Scotland, and reporting to the Machine Shop Manager, you will undergo training in all disciplines relating to machining within the Machine Shop.
Year 1 Full time in Angus Training College (Arbroath)
Apprentice CNC machinists would typically do Manual turning and milling operations, becoming accustomed and comfortable with the operation of manual lathes. They would also carry out fitting and assembly operations to ensure they are comfortable and competent operating manual and hydraulic tooling and equipment. A large percentage of time will be spent CNC programming and using various CNC machines as well as softer skills such as reading drawings, measuring, doing their own QA, problem solving and toolbox meetings.
Year 2 Join up with the team in NOV Machining & Testing services (Montrose)
Year 2 Apprentices join NOV in the workshop, they will be allocated a full time machinist mentor (Typically an ex apprentice themselves) They will spend time with different operators overseeing jobs from start to finish. Gradually the apprentices will be expected to assist with programming & set up’s whilst under constant supervision. All apprentices are expected to complete a log book timely and effectively. Training in HSE & Quality fundamentals will also be provided, year 2 apprentices should demonstrate these behaviours prior to year 3.
Year 3 NOV Machining & Testing services (Montrose)
Year 3 Apprentices : Continuing on from year 2 but given more responsibility in day to day machining operations, supervision reduced however mentor remains in place, Apprentices expected to start solving real world problems, gaining programming experience and completing full set ups. Actively engaged in HSE & Quality on the shop floor. Communication skills should also be developing to allow complex discussions with quality, management and potentially 3rd party visitors.
Year 4 NOV Machining & Testing services (Montrose)
Year 4 Apprentices : A final year apprentice should be able to work with minimal supervision and be able to demonstrate capability to programme, carry out machine set up’s and complete jobs from start to finish. Inspection and measurement to ensure quality and accuracy is also expected. HSE Advocate, housekeeping at a high standard and taking a pride in their work. In NOV during the final year exposure will also be given on our premium threading work, this will be done overseeing existing competent operators. All apprentice log books and training plans should be complete and signed off by the end of the 4th year to a high standard.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Learn from time served machinists.
- Attend college as required.
- Complete log books as required.
- Report any environmental and health & safety issues that arise.
- Be involved in Environmental, Health & Safety issues.
- Aid machinist as required.
- Ensure personal compliance with all HSE legislation and HSE Company policy.
- Be fully familiar and fully conversant with department and company policies, procedures and processes, ensuring all work and actions undertaken are in full compliance at all times.
- Support other departments and carry out other duties as and when business requirements dictate as may be reasonably expected by line manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Good standard of high school education or equivalent (essential).
- Angus Training Group Test Pass (essential).
EXPERIENCE:
- Working knowledge within any role (desirable).
SKILLS, TRAINING OR SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE:
- Competent in arithmetic (essential).
- Competent level of understanding in: e ngineering terminologies (essential) , m achine tools (essential) , a ttain NC Level (desirable).
