This exciting role offers an opportunity to Join the ETCS Integration Design Team within Siemens as part of the East Coast Digital Project (ECDP). The successful candidate will support a vastly experienced Design and Project team in delivering the retrofit of Freight Locomotives with the Siemens ETCS Trainguard 200 system.
The successful candidate will have or be working towards a qualification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, although experience of Railway or Rolling Stock Design is not essential, a keen interest in engineering is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will be based in the Siemens Regional Derby office an average of 3 days per and two days per week working from home. The role will be primarily design focused but will entail placements working across the project gaining experience including System Engineering, Human Factors, Installation, Test, Safety and Project Engineering.
This role provides the opportunity to travel both in the UK and overseas, ensuring an international flavour to your knowledge base and, over time, establish a rounded career in a global railway industry.
Key Accountabilities:
- Will become a key member of the Derby ETCS Freight Design Team, producing electrical or mechanical drawings and documents on various projects.
- Will work with the engineering team members in the UK & Europe (Derby, Chippenham & Germany) throughout Siemens, to ensure that the project design solutions meet all industry technical and regulatory requirements, as well as satisfying our customers’ needs now, and in the future.
- Provide input and ideas to help determine the most appropriate technical, product and commercial solutions within the given geographical and technical environment.
- Provide input to innovation and value engineering is applied to all proposals.
- Ensure all customer contractual requirements are met, along with all design engineering requirement laid down in Siemens internal requirements and all Industry mandatory standards have full demonstratable compliance.
- Ensure safety is considered throughout all aspects of the Project.
- Self-managing allocated scope of work packages and reporting progress on a weekly basis to both local manager and senior project team.
- A key player within the Integration Team.
- Willingness to develop and learn.
- Willingness and ability to work from Derby 3 days per week in line with the Integration Team.
- Willingness to participate in site visits country wide which may involve overnight stays.
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of personalities
- Exposure and working with customer Network Rail and Freight Operating Companies.
- Follow and adhere to Siemens drawing and document control procedures.

- Have 3 A Levels at grade C or above in at least one STEM related subject or a level 3 BTEC at pass or above
- Undertaking or undertaken a qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Ability to work the basics of CAD packages.
Desirable:
Insight into Railway Signalling or Locomotive Engineering.- Appreciation of implementing ETCS, CBTC or similar systems from other sectors.
- Personal Track Safety (PTS).
