The advertised post is for an Apprentice Biomedical Scientist equivalent to AfC Band 4.
The job role will include:
Completion of a 4-year Level 6 Healthcare Science Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship programme delivered by Nottingham Trent University (including completion of the IBMS Certificate of Competence).

Working at Medical Laboratory Assistant, Associate Practitioner and Trainee Biomedical Scientist levels across the whole of the Clinical Microbiology Department at defined points throughout the 4-year Apprenticeship programme
Sample receipt, sample processing, test setup and result interpretation.
Liaising with team members within the department, within the trust and external to the trust.
Please note, prior to interview you will be required to choose one of the following three options:
- I would like to opt for a fixed role in Virology, Serology and Molecular (VSM)
- I would like to opt for a fixed role in Bacteriology
- I have no preference
Working as part of the Support Staff team(estimated years 1-2)
Working as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist(estimated years 3-4)
The Clinical Microbiology service is a comprehensive 24/7 medical microbiology service handling in excess of 900,000 bacteriology and virology samples per year.
We are active in supporting infection prevention, control & diagnostics of a wide range of infections.
The laboratory is fully UKAS accredited and is approved by the IBMS as a Training Centre and has experience in producing both HCPC Registered and Specialist Biomedical Scientists. The department fully supports continuing professional development.
We utilise a range of traditional, semi-automated, automated and specialist molecular techniques in the investigation of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal pathogens.
Please note this is a 24/7 service operating with early, core, late and night shifts. the post-holder will be expected to part-take in these shifts as directed by the departmental management team.

- Completion of the Apprenticeship degree programme
- Completion of the IBMS Certificate of Competence
- Sample receipt across the whole Clinical Microbiology service
- Sample processing in accordance with defined laboratory Standard Operating Procedures
- Test setup in accordance with defined laboratory Standard Operating Procedures
- Result interpretation in accordance with defined laboratory Standard Operating Procedures
