Job Summary
As a lifting & safety supervisor you will be involved in the planning and execution of all lifting related activities and for maintaining high levels of safety. You will have strong leadership capabilities and aim to mentor all lifting trained personnel in a right first-time attitude. Daily and weekly reporting requirements to your line manager and any other works as deemed relevant to the role.
Role and Responsibilities
- Working proactively with Health, Safety & Facility Manager to ensure all policies are being adhered to.
- Liaising with Managers and staff regarding H&S matters, offering advice and assistance when required.
- Influence and manage a positive safety attitude to the workforce.
- Monitoring all H&S activities across a multi-site complex, ensuring that the company remains compliant with legislation.
- Completing regular site inspections and audits to monitor compliance with HSE requirements and drawing up corrective action plans to address identified non-compliances.
- Recommending solutions to issues, identifying improvement opportunities or new prevention measures.
- Support in the Investigating of accidents, near misses and working with others to prevent future occurrences.
- Conduct site inductions & training.
- Be responsible for the day to day running of all lifting personnel and related tasks.
- Lifting gear stock control and inspections.
- Daily/weekly updates to management.
- Develop, implement, continually improve, and communicate lifting plans for lifts on site.
- Carry out risk assessments and be able to select and brief supervisors to ensure sufficient planning, supervision, and safe execution of lifting operations.
- Co-ordinate and be present to supervise lifting activities in accordance with the lifting plan.
- Ensure that only registered and appointed crane operator, certified signaler, and rigger participate in any lifting operation involving the use of any cranes.
- Check and ensure proper ground conditions are suitable and safe for any lifting operations.
- Ensure that crane operators conduct daily checks of their assigned lifting machines and appliances prior to the start of their work-shift.
- Brief all crane operators, riggers, and signalmen on the safe lifting procedures in place.
- Check the validity of lifting machine certificate by Approved Person and maintenance inspection program.
- Ensure that safe lifting procedures are for any lifting operation.
- If unsafe conditions are reported, to take suitable measures to rectify the conditions so that the lifting operation can be conducted safely.
- In any situation where immediate rectification cannot be done, ensure that all necessary measures are taken to make the situation and area safe before reporting to supervisor.
- Wear reflective vest and/or any other PPE specified by the company to be identified as a lifting supervisor during lifting operation.
- Lead daily toolbox meeting with supervisors and workers for effective consultation, communication, and coordination before commencement of work.
- Ensure compliance to relevant government regulations and company’s quality, safety, health and environmental (QSHE) policies, practices, and procedures always.
- Support audits, investigations, and surveys to maintain compliance of lifting activities as required as part of the company Integrated Audit Programs.
- Perform any other tasks as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ensuring Health and Safety is being monitored and communicated to all staff.
- Proven experience within a large-scale fabrication environment.
- Sound knowledge of lifting laws & processes.
- The ability to troubleshoot and be proactive in their approach to managing a diverse workforce.
- Proficient in the use of IT applications including MS office suite.
- Great communication skills, with the ability to engage with colleagues and stakeholders at multiple levels.
- H&S awareness always.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
- Detailed knowledge and understanding or experience of other roles within a lifting operation such as supervision, slinging or crane operation.
- Experience or hold relevant safety qualifications.
- Hold an SVQ/NVQ Level 4 Controlling Lifting Operations for Appointed Person.
- Detailed understanding of LOLER and BS7121 requirements & other industry applicable regulations and practices.
- A track record of making intelligent evidence-based decisions using various sources of data and resolving conflicting operational priorities.
- Demonstrable experience in reviewing and updating complex engineering documentation and participating in extensive discussions covering many disciplines and specialist subject matters with respect to solving challenging lifting operations related problems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and the ability to effectively manage and prioritise your own workload.
- Proficient use of MS Office software and ideally CAD packages with well-developed presentation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Physical Demands
- Position may be subject to some physically demanding tasks I.e., Climbing ladders, working at height, manual handling lifting equipment, on feet most of day.
