Job Duties
The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Department is to provide the workers' compensation system with an expeditious and efficient alternative to litigation for the resolution of disputes. By facilitating better communication between the parties, ADR aims to provide a better understanding of the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Act and Commission processes. ADR staff answers questions and provides assistance regarding workers' compensation benefits and Commission procedures. Our specialists work to quickly resolve issues and disputes by facilitating the exchange of information between parties.
The ADR Department of Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission seeks a qualified, customer-focused individual who thrives in a team-oriented environment to serve as an ADR Jr Specialist. As ADR JR Specialist, you will work with the ADR Team in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) by coordinating facilitation and mediation activities, and working with parties directly to informally and expediently resolve contested claims issues. In addition, you would facilitate resolution of issues using excellent customer service skills and mediation techniques via oral and written communication. Must pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment.
VWC Compensation Structure
This position is classified as a pay grade 5 based on a 14 pay grade scale as part of VWC's compensation structure.
Telework Structure
Our agency is currently using a hybrid model for teleworking. Our positions at this time are not 100% teleworking. All candidates would be expected to report to our Headquarters/Regional Office as requested. Telework scheduling is at the discretion of the Manager based on the business needs of the department. Upon hire, candidates should expect to have all training and orientation conducted at the Headquarters Office.

Minimum Qualifications
- Experience working with workers' compensation or insurance claims. Mediation or ADR experience preferred.
- Significant experience with worker's compensation highly desirable.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
- Requires strong computer skills working with Microsoft Office applications (including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint), database programs, and Internet research principles. Must be able to track data and information in Excel spreadsheets.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and exercise good judgment.
- Must have strong, effective interpersonal communication skills, both orally and in writing; excellent customer service skills interacting with internal and external customers at all levels; and strong organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the Virginia Workers' Compensation Act/rules/regulations and Commission procedures preferred.
- Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in business, liberal arts, or related field or equivalent experience in workers' compensation or ADR.
